COVID-19 and Prison Resources

Prisons and jails have been epicenters for the COVID-19 pandemic. Correctional facilities are large infection clusters. In April 2020, infection rates in Michigan prisons exceeded that in New York and Chicago facilities. In June and July 2020, nearly 3,000 incarcerated individuals tested positive in San Quentin Prison. As of April 2021, 1 in 34 incarcerated people have been infected with COVID-19, which is three times the national infection rate. While COVID-19 persists in correctional facilities, coverage of the pandemic and its impact on the people inside is not always at the forefront of news media. This page is a list of academic, national, and local coverage and databases about the conditions of correctional facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic and the responses by authorities and links to COVID-19 data tracking databases for all 50 state and federal department of corrections systems. This page also includes more specific coverage of women's, juvenile, and immigration centers to highlight the unique circumstances of each group.
