If Michigan College Month is on the horizon for you or if you are generally interested in how you can prepare for this month, look no further!
October: College Month is here! Reach out to your adviser or counselor to see what colleges you can apply to for free.
Early October: The FAFSA is open! Meet with your adviser or counselor if you have questions or need help completing this very important document to get free money for college.
Early October: The deadline to sign up for the November SAT. If you need to retake it (or take it for the first time), have your adviser or counselor help you register soon to save your spot.
Early November: The early application deadline for many 4-year colleges. Submitting an early application to a school increases your chances of being accepted and shows you’re interested in attending, so make sure you apply early to your top choices!
As you get ready for the deadlines above, it’s also a great time to make sure you have your letters of recommendation ready to send if you need to.
Dear Mr./Mrs./Ms. [Teacher Last Name],
I hope you’re doing well today. I’m trying to get ahead on applying to college next year, and wanted to know if you would please be able to write me a letter of recommendation? I’ve appreciated my time [in your class/on the team/working with you/etc.], and think you’d be the best person to write me a strong letter.
I’ve attached a brag sheet below with some information about myself, but please let me know if you need to know more about the schools I’m applying to. I would like to turn in all my materials by [date before application is due], so I would need this letter completed by then, if possible.
Thank you so much for your help. I really appreciate it!
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
Send along your resume or brag sheet
If you have one, you can also send your résumé or brag sheet to your recommender. This way, they know about the things you do outside of class, especially if you haven’t talked to them too much about your personal life.
Don’t forget to ask for the recommendation 2-4 weeks before the deadline so that they have plenty of time to write a good letter.
If checklists are your thing, here are some action items to work on before the start of College Month!
Meet with your guidance counselor or adviser to find out what your GPA is. This can be very helpful in deciding your post-graduation plans and building a college list that’s right for you!
Meet with your counselor or adviser to finalize your college list and make sure they send your transcript to the correct schools and scholarships.
Letters of Recommendation
Need to take the SAT? Sign up for the November test on the College Board website! Make sure to ask your counselor or adviser if you can get a fee waiver to take it for free.
We hope this helps you get a head start on things before College Month!
