Journalism: Views on the News
Journalism: Views on the News
In this course, we explored the critical role of journalism and news in society, focusing on how news differs from other types of information, and the factors that shape it, including individual, organizational, political, and economic influences. We examined the impact of technological changes on journalism, particularly the shift in gatekeeping power due to the internet and social media. This shift has made it harder for journalists to maintain control over information, with their work now competing with non-credible sources for public attention. Through assignments like analyzing news articles, reflecting on my personal news environment, and proposing solutions to contemporary journalism issues, I developed critical thinking skills and a deeper appreciation for the importance of a free press in democracy. This work enhanced my ability to evaluate, analyze, and engage with news, skills I can apply in any media-related job.
For this assignment, my task was to:
Choose a Current Issue: I identified an issue that is jeopardizing the future of the newsgathering industry
Collect Data: Read through about 25 articles and identify if a data breach occurred, where the date breach took place, as well if the data breach was caused by a third party. Organize this data and see in terms of media gate keeping, agenda setting, and framing what can be done to combat this issue.
Argue the Solution: Argue for an innovative solution to the major dilemma of data breaches that shape the future and crisis of mobile digital communication.
