MEET OUR student WRITERS

Alex McCullough, Year: Senior, Major: English, Minor: Spanish


Alex McCullough is a writer from Toledo. In his fourth and final year at the University of Michigan, he is pursuing a B.A. in English with a minor in Spanish. Within the English major, he is a member of the Capstone in Creative Writing cohort, for which he is writing a short story collection. He has written both fiction and poetry for Canopy Magazine and is an alumnus of the Lloyd Scholars for Writing and the Arts; in 2021, he was the recipient of a Caldwell Poetry Award. When not writing, Alex enjoys sad music, nectarines, fresh gossip, new cookware, a not-so-casual "Fleabag" rewatch, autumnal ennui, and reminiscing. 


Erin Knape, Year: Junior, Major: Psychology, Minor: Creative Writing


Erin is a junior majoring in psychology and minoring in creative writing at the University of Michigan. Mental health and identity are critical areas of exploration, both in her writing and everyday experience. As a prose writer, she seeks to understand herself and assist others in the process of healing and self-discovery. When she isn’t writing, Erin enjoys snapping photographs, indulging in way too much Netflix, and spending time with friends and family. Erin is excited to complete her debut novel, Falling, which centers on a group of isolated and vulnerable young adults caught up in the chaos of their early twenties. 


Ivy Guo, Year: Sophomore, Major: Economics; History


Ziyu (Ivy) Guo is currently a sophomore at the University of Michigan double majoring in economics and history. She is interested in interdisciplinary topics and loves self-reflection. In the future, Ivy wishes to utilize her sensibility to improve herself and help others. 


Olivia Han, Year: Sophomore, Major: Creative Writing and Literature; Communications and Media


Olivia Han is a sophomore studying both Creative Writing and Literature and Communications and Media. She recently re-discovered her childhood love for all forms of creative writing and expression, and is inspired by movies, television, cartoons, music and art. In her free time, she loves singing in her A Capella Group, Amazin' Blue, playing guitar, dancing, readings, training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA fighting, and drawing. Olivia can't wait to continue exploring her creative expression through writing! 


Shelby Brown, Year: Junior, Major: English, Minor: Writing


Shelby is a third year student in LSA, majoring in English, with a Sweetland Writing minor and a Capstone in Creative Writing. She is a poet at heart and uses her writing to explore things like memory, purpose, love, and more. In her freetime, she loves exploring nature, reading fantasy, drinking tea, and eating food. You'll find bits of all of those things in her writing. 


Ruth Marks, Year: Junior, Major: Art & Design


Ruth is a junior studying Art & Design at the University of Michigan. She is passionate about print media, particularly literature and printmaking. She loves to combine narrative and illustration and pursues this as Art Director of Gargoyle Humor Magazine. She hopes to create her own series of illustrated books in the future. 


Haley Brosnan, Year: Sophomore, Major: English; Political Science


Haley is a sophomore at the University of Michigan studying English and Political Science. She is also in the UROP Creative Writing and Publishing program, where she is currently working on a full-length poetry collection that explores complex emotions and personal growth. Her other work includes script writing and journalism for the Current2 news podcast. When she isn’t writing, she loves being in nature and seeing local bands. 


Charlotte Parent, Year: Junior, Major: English; Information Analysis


Charlotte Parent is a junior from Grosse Pointe Park, MI, pursuing a dual degree in English and Information Analysis. After writing her first “book” (a perfectly-punctuated replication of "Barbie and the Diamond Castle") when she was six, she fell in love with stories. When she's not reading, she’s writing; when she’s not writing, she’s cheering on Michigan & Detroit sports. She is a columnist for The Statement Magazine in The Michigan Daily and is involved in a smattering of other clubs on campus. Charlotte plans to publish her first novel in the coming years.

Owen Heidings, Year: First-year, Major: Economics


Owen is a first-year from New York, NY, majoring in economics. He loves reading, writing, and poetry and is fascinated with behavioral psychology and political science. In his free time, you can find Owen curled up with a good book, practicing guitar, or drinking a chai latte in a cozy coffee shop. Owen enjoys walking in nature and frequently visits parks to relax. He hopes to go to graduate school for a joint JD/MBA and work in a career at the intersection of business, law, and academia. 

Macie Hayden, Year: Sophomore, Major: Creative Writing and Literature; Linguistics, Minor: Community Action and Social Change


Macie is a sophomore in LSA and a first-gen college student from the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina. At UMich, they love their job as a student coordinator at the Spectrum Center and their current role as managing editor of the RC Review, the Residential College’s literary magazine. They are passionate about all things related to poetry, horror movies, music, and their dog. Macie would say the biggest supporter behind their writing (and everything else they do) is definitely their grandma, Nona. They’re happy to keep pursuing writing supported by the people they love! 

Roma Uzzaman, Year: Senior, Major: English; Psychology


Roma is a senior studying English and psychology. She writes in whatever form strikes her fancy, including but not limited to: fiction, poetry, plays, and lyrics. Roma is interested primarily in themes of death and love: how they are two sides of the same coin, both inevitabilities. She spends her free time in rehearsal for whichever production she's currently working on, playing visual novels, and watching videos of rats on the internet.

Anu Lath, Year: Sophomore, Major: Creative Writing and Literature; Philosophy; Spanish


Anuttara is a sophomore at the University of Michigan studying creative writing, philosophy and Spanish. She has been reading and writing for as long as she can remember and her all-time favorite genres include fantasy, mystery and horror. She also enjoys swimming, yoga, eating/making tasty food, hiking and singing. She plans to go to law school after undergrad, but will definitely continue writing in the future! 

Madeleine Miller, Year: Senior, Major: Economics, Minor: Environment; Social Class & Inequality Studies


Madeleine is a fourth year student at the University of Michigan majoring in Economics and minoring in Environment and Social Class & Inequality Studies. She has always enjoyed the art of writing, whether through journalism, poetry, fiction, or screenwriting. Her favorite writing inspiration is Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and her favorite past-time is being a mediocre chef. 

Amanda Pirani, Year: Junior, Major: Political Science; Creative Writing


Amanda Venclovaite Pirani is a junior at The University of Michigan, class of 2025. She is pursuing a double major in political science and creative writing. When she is not writing poems, Amanda enjoys crocheting and hiking in her home state of New Hampshire. 

Luke Pace, Year: Senior, Major: Film, Television & Media


Luke is a fourth year student studying Film, TV, & Media. He spends most of his time sitting around, wondering if he's any good at writing; but when he's not doing that, he can be found singing with his acapella group, playing overly complex board games, and trying out new types of tea (recommendations are always welcome!). He hopes to pursue a career in whatever will make it possible to spend his weekends on the beach, in the company of good friends. 

Alycia Pietrzak, Major: Creative Writing


Alycia is a first generation transfer student currently in her second semester at UofM, studying Creative Writing and potentially a minor in music. What draws Alycia toward writing is the act of crafting, shaping, and breathing life into words on a page so that characters and their stories become tangible. Alycia is most comfortable creating fantastical worlds, particularly drawn by the supernatural, uncanny, or magical, but she sometimes writes poetry or creative non-fiction on her personal writing blog. When Alycia isn't writing, she enjoys playing the viola with the Campus Philharmonia, leading baking lessons with the Great University of Michigan Baking Club, embroidering, reading, or playing Minecraft. She hopes to one day be a best-selling novelist and inspire future artists and creators just as her inspirations did for her. 

Taylor Burnham, Year: Junior, Major: Psychology; Creative Writing, Minor: Community Action and Social Change


Taylor is a junior at the University of Michigan double majoring in Psychology and Creative Writing with a minor in Community Action and Social Change. She enjoys writing fiction, poetry, and lyrics, delving into themes of romance and mental health. Beyond writing, her interests include crocheting, reading, and exploring herself through musical expression. Taylor aspires to create stories that audiences can empathize with and find comfort in. Her writing dream is for a novel she writes to be adapted into a movie or television show. 

Maddie Wren, Major: History; Political Science


Maddie is a sophomore studying History and Political Science. She plans on attending law school after graduation and pursuing civil rights law. She enjoys creative writing, particularly poetry. In her free time she likes to read, run, bake, and spend time with friends. 

Emily Weiss, Year: Senior, Major: Psychology


Emily Weiss is a senior from New York City majoring in Psychology. While creative writing is a newfound hobby, she is drawn to creating fictional characters who grapple with their mental health, as well as writing about other topics that integrate her passion for psychology with her love of storytelling. 

Donovan Rogers, Year: Senior, Major: Theatre, Minor: Playwriting and Performing Arts Management; Entrepreneurship

Donovan Rogers is a 4th year multidisciplinary artist and researcher earning his BFA in Theatre with minors in Playwriting and Performing Arts Management & Entrepreneurship. He is the Founding and Producing Artistic Director of The DR’s Laboratory (DRL), BSU’s 2023 Breakout Organization of the Year, that designs entertainment research, methodologies, and productions intended to build Black equity in the arts. Recently, Donovan earned The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Region III’s Best Full Length Play Award for his choreopoem, Into the Light of the Dark, Black Night, which fables heartbroken Black men relearning how to love again as black birds relearning how to fly. From producing and performing in DRL’s Freedom Community Music Tour to designing and facilitating DRL’s Princess Project, a New Orleans creative study engaging Xavier University of Louisiana, Donovan hopes to show Black UM students that just because they’re 4% of the campus population, does not mean that they’re limited to making a 4% impact.

Paris LeClaire, Year: First-year, Major: English


Paris is a fiction writer hailing from West Michigan. She enjoys reading revisionist Westerns and pondering to sad acoustic music. You can find her somewhere on a looooong walk. 

Jiayou Shen, Year: Junior, Major: Psychology; English


Jiayou Shen is a psychology and English double major and writing minor. She likes writing fiction and is chipping away at her novel. She enjoys the genres of urban fantasy and dark humor. Jiayou likes to play DnD, drink bubble tea, and eat good food in her free time. She hopes to expand her creative horizons and write more in the future.

Nate Sheehan, Year: Senior, Major: Theatre Arts, Minor: American Culture; Poetry


Nate Sheehan is a senior at the University of Michigan pursuing a bachelor in theatre arts with a playwriting concentration with Performing Arts Management and Entrepreneurship (PAME), American Culture and Poetry minors. He has been inspired by how we shape language into stories since the first time he was asked to write a personal narrative in the third grade and moves between the mediums of playwriting, screenwriting and poetry He's excited to be a part of Cafe Shapiro's series and continue pursuing performance opportunities.

Julie Takabe, Year: Sophomore


Julie is a second-year  student with a love for playing the violin and reading Raymond Carver and David Foster Wallace. She enjoys writing non-fiction and likes seeing readers' reactions to her work.
