Send the syllabus for your Programming Prerequisite Course by April 31st
Shortly after admission you will receive an email asking you to send the syllabus for the course you used to satisfy your Introduction to Computer Programming Requirement. The email will detail which course was utilized to satisfy the requirement. This may be different that what you identified on your application.
Note: Some students will not receive a request for their syllabus because UMSI has already received the information. For an example, if a student has taken their prerequisite at an institution where UMSI receives many transfer students we may already have the information and will not send a request.
If you have yet to complete or take your programming prerequisite you will still need to send the syllabus for the course you are taking, or plan to take. For students taking this course over a spring or summer term you can identify the course and reach out to your institution's Academic Advising Office to request the syllabus. If you have questions, or issues getting a syllabus, please notify the BSI Admissions Team at umsi.undergrad@umich.edu to identify a plan.
Although finding housing in Ann Arbor can be challenging, it is certainly not impossible! There are many options to explore as you consider your housing options.
On-Campus Housing: As reported on the U-M Housing website, space for transfer students is extremely limited and it is encouraged that students explore off-campus housing options. Typically there are a few transfer students that are able to secure on-campus housing, so if you wish to apply you may watch for an email from U-M Housing in mid-April with a link to complete an application. Submission of a housing application does not guarantee on-campus housing, and due to the limitation we highly encourage that you explore off-campus options.
Off-Campus Housing: It is highly encouraged that you consider off-campus housing options given that on-campus housing is limited for transfer students. You are welcome to explore off-campus housing independently, but if you are looking for assistance it is encouraged that you work with Beyond the Diag. Beyond the Diag is U-M's off campus housing program with the Dean of Student Office. It was developed in order to improve off-campus safety resources for students. Beyond the Diag services include:
An Off-Campus Listing Service that allows you to browse available housing options in the Ann Arbor area. You can filter the search by price, number of beds, amenities, etc.
A Roommate Finding Service that allows you to browse other U-M students that are looking for roommates in the area. On this page students list their budget, living preferences, and information about themselves to help identify a good fit. You will not be able to access this page until you have made a U-M or Friend Account. If you have not done so, return to step 2.
An Off-Campus Living Guide that provides you with information that is pertinent to know as an Ann Arbor resident. This guide outlines resources to guide you through late night transportation, student safety, trash collection & recycling, and other helpful information.
If you have questions for Beyond the Diag you may email them at beyondthediag@umich.edu.
Commuter Students: Some students choose to commute to campus, and there are a few parking options if you wish to do so. To start to understand parking options you may review the Campus Parking Options for Students. As a student being admitted at the Junior level, you are eligible for the Student Orange Permit. There are also a number of Free Parking possibilities, including a park & ride option that allows you to park in various free spaces in Ann Arbor then utilize the Ann Arbor/Campus bus system to navigate campus. This is a popular option, especially since all Ann Arbor/Campus buses are free to U-M students with your student ID.
For more information on housing options, please see the FAQ page.

Sending Your High School Transcript or GED Results
While not required for admission, sending your official high school transcript or GED results is an institutional requirement. Students that do not send their official high school transcript or GED results may risk complications with their Financial Aid and any scholarship awards they may be eligible or applied for. Please send your official high school transcript or GED results using the instructions below by April 31st. If you have complications regarding this request please email the BSI Admissions Team at umsi.undergrad@umich.edu.
To send your official high school transcript you can do the following:
Contact your high school and ask how they prefer to send official transcripts. If they choose to send them via email or physical mail you can ask that they go directly to the School of Information at umsi.undergrad@umich.edu or mailed to:
School of Information Admissions
University of Michigan
333 Maynard, Suite 500
Ann Arbor, MI 48104
Some schools will instruct you to utilize Parchment or National Student Clearinghouse. These are all acceptable options for sending transcripts, you may mark the recipient as umsi.undergrad@umich.edu of the mailing address above.
Note: We cannot accept official transcripts directly from you. They must come from your current/previous school. These are the only emails and addresses to send transcripts for the BSI program. If you attended high school internationally and have an extenuating circumstance preventing you from requesting your transcript please contact the BSI Admissions Team at umsi.undergrad@umich.edu to determine next steps.
Sending Your Transcripts from Colleges & Universities
Ask the registrar of your current/previous school to send official transcripts* (with all course work posted) directly to the School of Information at umsi.transcripts@umich.edu or mailed to:
School of Information Admissions
University of Michigan
333 Maynard, Suite 500
Ann Arbor, MI 48104
Many institutions are able to send transcripts through their Student Records offices or websites. Some will instruct you to utilize Parchment or National Student Clearinghouse.
If a final transcript is not available at the time of admission or when you are planning to transfer, you will receive a tentative evaluation of transferable credits prior to Orientation. A copy will also be given to the academic advisors to assist you during Orientation and Registration.
**What is a Final Transcript?**
A final official transcript shows that there are no courses in progress, that you are not currently enrolled, and is sent directly from your institution.
Note: If you are still in the progress of taking classes at your current institution, you will have to send us your transcripts twice. 1) For all completed coursework and 2) Once all courses in progress have been completed. This will help process your transfer evaluation in a timely manner.
Example: William attended Grand Rapids Community College, Henry Ford Community College, and is currently enrolled 13 credits hours at Eastern Michigan University and planning to take 3 more credits at Eastern over the summer. William has no plans to re-enroll at Grand Rapids Community College or Henry Ford Community College before starting at UMSI
What should William do?
First – William should go ahead and have Grand Rapids Community College and Henry Ford Community College send his official transcripts over to UMSI as he has no intention of completing additional credits.
Second – William should complete the 13 credits AND the 3 he is planning to take over the summer at Eastern, then and have Eastern send the final official transcript to UMSI.
NOTE: The School of Information accepts all college-level transfer credit for courses with a grade of C- or above. The maximum number of credits you may transfer is 60 unless you have earned an associate's degree. If you have earned an Associate's degree you can transfer up to 62 credits.
Transfer Credit Contact: BSI Admissions (umsi.undergrad@umich.edu) - If you have earned an associate's degree or have questions about sending in your transcript or about the transfer credit review process, please email BSI Admissions.
It is encouraged that you maintain communication with the BSI Admissions Team as you plan your transfer. Keep an eye on your U-M email as you complete the transfer process, and to confirm all steps have been completed email the BSI Admissions Team at umsi.undergrad@umich.edu.
If you are currently an F-1 visa holder who has studied at another institution in the United States within the last 5 months, we require an additional form from the Affidavit of Financial Support. The Transfer-In Form is composed of two sections to be filled out by you and your current school's Designated School Official (DSO) or International Student Advisor (ISA). This form should be completed and submitted along with the Affidavit of Financial Support via the Qualtrics Form, which is emailed to students shortly after they formally accept their admission and matriculate into the program.
Admitted international students have unique eligibility requirements and considerations when planning to study in the US. For up to date information on guidelines and additional information related to I-20s, please reference the information provided by the International Center.
If you have any questions about the I-20 process, please email the UMSI I-20 Team at umsi.i-20s@umich.edu.
Please continue checking your email regularly after completing these steps!
