Françoise (aka Fran) obtained a Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry in 1992 from the University of Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. Her role in the Beard group is to manage the wet lab, and train students, post-doctoral fellows, and visitors wanting to probe the molecular and cellular coupling of energy metabolism in heart, skeletal muscle, or the tissue/cell types of their choices. In her free time, Fran enjoys walking, watching movies, spending time with Jacko her parrot, and going back to Belgium.

Departmental Profile
Feng obtained his M.D. from Central South University in China in 2022. Before officially joining the lab, he participated as a visiting student, which was part of his dual M.D.-Ph.D. training program, focusing on baroreceptor research and computational modeling. Currently, his research involves using physiology-informed machine learning to accurately phenotype patients with heart failure. In his leisure time, Feng enjoys cooking, reading, playing video games, and spending time with his family.

Graduate Student, Chemical Biology
Nicole obtained a B.S in Chemistry and a B.S in Zoology along with two minors in Mathematics and Physiology from the University of Wyoming in 2020. Her doctoral research in the Beard lab utilizes in vitro, in vivo, and computational methods to study metabolic mechanisms behind ischemia-reperfusion injury in cardiac tissue. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, reading, gardening, and spending time with her cat Leo.

Noah is a research phase MSTP student, focusing on the use of computations models to better understand heart failure in adults with congenital heart defects. Outside of lab, Noah loves to spend time with his wife and dog hiking at Birds Hill nature area or playing fetch in their backyard.

Undergraduate student, College of LSA
Andrew is an undergraduate student in the college of LSA majoring in Mathematical Biology and minoring in Computer Science, Biochemistry, and Spanish. His research employs computational cardiovascular systems modeling with machine learning techniques to better understand cardiovascular disease in the context of resting and exercise physiology. In his free time, he enjoys volunteering at the hospital, watching SpongeBob and exercising.
