NCI T32 training grant

Sponsor: National Cancer Institute

Project Date: July 2020 - Jun. 2025, PI: Christopher Friese

Nina Jackson Levin (Social Work and Anthropology) received a prestigious National Cancer Institute T-32 Pre-Doctoral Training Grant. This training program prepares Pre- and Post-Doctoral Fellows in Interdisciplinary Approaches to Cancer Care Delivery. This T32 Fellowship will support Jackson Levin’s dissertation research on health disparities amongst adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer patients seeking reproductive health and fertility preservation services.

Dr. Christopher Friese (Elizabeth Tone Professor of Nursing and Associate Director, Rogel Cancer Center) serves as the Principal Investigator for this grant. Jackson Levin will be co-mentored by Dr. Megan Rist Haymart (Associate Professor of Endocrine Oncology) and Dr. Bradley Zebrack (Professor of Social Work). Dr. Zebrack is Jackson Levin’s dissertation chair and primary advisor in Social Work, and has supported her engagement in AYA cancer research at Michigan Medicine throughout her efforts toward achieving candidacy.

As Research Director of the newfound Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology Program at Michigan Medicine, Dr. Zebrack’s mentorship within Jackson Levin’s T32 is linked to the larger project of developing research infrastructure to support pre-doctoral fellows pursuing AYA dissertation research. Jackson Levin will also be supported by Dr. Anao Zhang (Assistant Professor of Social Work and Clinical Research Director of AYA CARE). As a precedent to this T32, Dr. Zhang and Jackson Levin received the Curtis Center Special Programs Initiative grant to establish a Psycho-Oncology Pre-Doctoral Fellowship with a focus on health disparity research in cancer care. These intersecting mechanisms not only support Jackson Levin’s dissertation research, but also enhance formal relationships between the School of Social Work, The Curtis Center, and Michigan Medicine through the Michigan Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology Program.
