The Asian Pacific Islander Desi/American Staff Association serves any staff member interested in engaging with the APID/A experience on the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor campus. The Association provides a variety of opportunities for staff to connect as a community. The work is based off of the 4 pillar acronym RACE.
Resources
Professional development, sharing events, and opportunities
Advocacy
Organizing and mobilizing around issues, taking a stand on matters of concern
Community
Mentoring, support, programs, and opportunities for networking
Education
Educating ourselves and others on issues that impact our community
In Fall 2017, a few Asian Pacific Islander Desi / American (APID/A) identifying staff gathered with an interest in building community. There was a need to meet each other, share our individual and collective sets of work, explore the possibility of creating a more consistent space where APID/A staff can meet one another and network, and get a sense of how many other identifying staff existed on campus. The group began gathering informally and the staff association was formed. The core members of the group solidified the pillars of the group after connecting with other affinity-based groups on campus and learning about best practices for creating a sustainable organization. This also provided an opportunity for a Coalition of affinity-based groups on campus to connect on important issues which continues on.
APID/A is an umbrella term intended to be inclusive of the broad and diverse Asian Diaspora and stands for Asian, Pacific Islander, Desi/American. This intentionally includes Desi, a broad term referencing many who identify as part of the South Asian diaspora.
The APID/A Staff Association serves any staff member interested in engaging with the APID/A experience on the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor campus.
Currently, the association is a loose-knit group that are weighing the pros and cons of a more institutionalized position as either a recognized group housed in an appropriate department or as an official university organization.

We understand that it can be challenging to justify attending identity-based staff association meetings and events.
We attempt to make our meetings accessible to all staff members located on central campus, north campus, and satellite offices. Staff can remote in to participate during lunch hours for the general meeting. We also aim to host one meeting per year on north campus.
Participation aligns with two of the strategies of UM's DEI plan, including creating an equitable and inclusive campus climate, and recruiting a diverse workforce
Participation aligns with multiple components of the Human Resources Michigan Expectations Model.
Lastly, we provide a focus on professional development opportunities that can fit well with supervisor expectations.
