Anne Ruggles Gere

Anne Ruggles Gere, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of English and Gertrude Buck Collegiate Professor of education serves as chair of the Joint PhD Program in English and Education. She was named  Distinguished Professor of the Year  by the Michigan Association of State Universities in  2018, and she has  received the Provost’s Teaching Innovation Prize;   the Regents’ Award for Distinguished Public Service: the D’Arms Award for Distinguished Graduate Student Mentoring; a Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award;  a Michigan Humanities Award; and a fellowship from the Institute for the Humanities at the University of Michigan. She has also received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Spencer Foundation. She is a Public Engagement Fellow for 2019-2020.

She has served as president of the National Council of Teachers of English, as chair of the Conference on College Composition and Communication, and as the 2018 president of the Modern Language Association.

She recently completed  a six-year study of undergraduates’ writing development, which led to the publication of Developing Writers in Higher Education: A Longitudinal Study and she is currently engaged in a project designed to integrate writing-to-learn pedagogies into large-enrollment gateway courses in STEM.  This project, M-Write, aims to use automated text analysis to provide feedback about student learning to both students and faculty.  

Professor Gere has published a dozen books and over 100 articles and is frequently invited to share her research with colleagues on other campuses.
