Congratulations on being recommended for admission to the Higher Education program in the Marsal School at the University of Michigan!
My name is Dr. Katie Madden, and I manage the master’s program in the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education (CSHPE). I am pleased to invite you to participate in the CSHPE internship placement in order to secure a 2024-2025 internship. All admitted students considering the CSHPE master's full-time program should participate in this placement, and must submit materials by February 20.
Completing a two-term internship is a requirement for the MA degree in Higher Education during the first year. Part-time students who work full-time in higher education may submit a request to waive the internship.
Below, please find several action items:
1. To be considered for a CSHPE internship placement, you must submit all application materials by February 20. Please visit this CSHPE internship info page to learn more. Due to the number of steps involved, we encourage you to begin working on your materials as soon as possible. The internship placement involves several steps and asks you to submit 8-10 individualized cover letters, among other required items.
2. Block your calendar for 12-5 p.m. ET on March 15, for virtual interviews. If you have a conflict with any part of the interview afternoon during these hours, please note this in your registration (the link for this is included on the internship info page). Sites will work with you after you receive your interview schedule/list to schedule an alternative time to meet.
3. Attend the virtual info session on applying to CSHPE internships, Feb. 12, at 12 p.m. ET. This webinar will provide an overview of internship placement, and we'll have time for questions. A Zoom link is HERE [see your email for the link and passcode].This event is optional, and a recording will be shared afterward.
With warm regards,
Katie Madden

Thank you if you were able to join us for our virtual discussion about CSHPE internship placement. It was exciting to see many faces!
Please consider reviewing these materials if you were unable to attend:
We had a number of questions, both during and after the session, about graduate assistant positions, which are different from CSHPE internships and are not coordinated through CSHPE. CSHPE internships do not provide tuition remission or healthcare, and instead pay an hourly salary, which averages $21.65 an hour. We discuss graduate assistantships (GAs) at 7:45 in the recording.
An overview of steps you must take by February 20 in order to apply for a CSHPE internship is on this information page, and also below. This is required for all full-time master's students in CSHPE.
An optional Facebook group is now available for students admitted to the CSHPE master’s program. You may wish to consider joining the group and introducing yourself!
If you have questions about the Higher Education program or being a student at the University of Michigan, please contact us at marsal.admissions@umich.edu.

Good Afternoon,
Thank you for submitting your CSHPE internship materials. Earlier in the process, we noticed that we had an error on the internship placement page, and incorrectly referred to March 15, when virtual interviews will take place, as a Monday.
Because of this, if you need to edit your availability for Friday, March 15, 12-5 p.m. ET, that you submitted via this form, please email me by this Sunday at 5 p.m.
Best,
Katie
March 15, 2024
**We apologize for multiple emails this morning. The previous email had an incorrect subject line.**
The CSHPE virtual interview day has arrived! We hope you are enjoying your conversations as you meet with internship hiring teams.
By 8 a.m. on Tuesday, please submit your post-interview rankings via this form. Your rankings will not determine internship placements but will be available for hiring teams who are considering which candidate to extend an offer to.
You must accept your offer of admission before you accept an internship offer. To accept your offer of admission via Wolverine Access, which is to matriculate, indicates that you are no longer considering other graduate programs.
If you matriculate and do not yet have an internship, this is okay! We will work with you this spring and summer to secure a placement in line with your interests and goals.
You may accept only one CSHPE internship. After you start the fall term, you will have an opportunity to consider adding supplemental internships. Internship offers will be extended starting on Wednesday, and continue for the next several weeks until April 15.
An overview of next steps in the internship placement after your interviews is explained on the internship info site (#11 and Next Steps). Please also review this placement information. If you have questions, let us know!
March 20, 2024
CSHPE internship teams will begin to extend offers today, and continue to do so during the upcoming few weeks!
When you receive an internship offer, please let the hiring team know within one business day that you have seen their message. Several example responses are available to provide ideas for how you might consider replying.
It's possible that you may receive more than one internship offer. In this case, congratulations! You should accept only one internship, and review the two-day rule (see below). The two-day rule is also discussed in this webinar recording at 28:00. If you have multiple offers, CSHPE will send an email to remind you of next steps you must take.
Please let us know when you make a decision about an internship, or if you would like to talk through your options as you consider your professional goals and priorities--I would be happy to schedule time to meet via Zoom.
Several reminders:
· You must accept your offer of admission before you accept an internship offer. To accept your offer of admission via Wolverine Access, which is to matriculate, indicates that you are no longer considering other graduate programs.
· You may accept only one CSHPE internship now. After you start the fall term, you will have an opportunity to consider adding supplemental internships.
· Thank you to those who have submitted your post-interview internship rankings. If you have not yet done so, please submit them via this form, as soon as possible.
· If you matriculate and do not yet have an internship, this is okay! We will work with you this spring and summer to secure a placement in line with your interests and goals.
Best,
Katie Madden

The "Two-Day" Rule:
In some cases, a student may receive multiple internship offers. In order to ensure the internship placement does not pause, students who receive more than one offer will have two business days to decline the offers that are not their current most preferred offer. In other words, if a student receives more than one internship offer, they must decline all but one of all those on the table at that moment, and retain only that which they identify as the placement they are most interested in--of the positions offered to them. At that point in time, they are not required to commit to the single offer they are continuing to consider.
To decline the offer(s) students are no longer considering, they should send an email to each internship hiring team who has extended an offer, and copy cshpe.internships@umich.edu, to clearly identify which offer(s) they are declining and which is their current most preferred offer that they are continuing to consider. After they communicate which internship offer is not their current preferred offer, and decline it, the declined internship position can then be offered to another candidate who is likely eagerly waiting to hear. Another way to think about this is that students must decline all but their top offer, but they need not accept an offer until April 15, per the agreement put forth by the Council for Graduate Schools (see below).
If a student knows with certainty that their current preferred offer is their most preferred internship site out of all the internship sites, and that they will accept an offer with that specific internship site if they matriculate at U-M, they may communicate that to the internship provider and cshpe.internships@umich.edu . This will prevent that student from receiving unnecessary communication from additional internship sites that could extend an offer to them, and which they would not be interested in; if the student determines they will not be attending U-M, that internship position can then be offered to another candidate. Students are not required to express that their current preferred offer is their overall top choice, but can choose to do this.
Each student in the master's program can accept only one internship at the start of their program, so should carefully consider their priorities in regard to this experiential learning component of their degree.
Below is a possible example scenario:
Morgan interviews with four internship sites on Campus Visit Day: Orientation Programs, Center for Educational Outreach, Engineering Academic Advising, and the Global Scholars Program. On Wednesday, she is excited to receive two internship offers, from Orientation Programs and the Engineering Advising Center. Morgan understands that she must identify which is her current preferred offer by that Friday because that is two days after she receives her offers. In other words, she can only continue to consider one offer, although she understands that she does not need to accept an offer until April 15.
Morgan decides to decline the offer from the Engineering Advising Center. She emails both internship sites, copying CSHPE, thanking both sites for their offers, and declining the position with the Engineering Advising Center. As Morgan continues to think seriously about her options for graduate school, she is leaning heavily toward matriculating at U-M but has not made a final decision yet regarding where she will be enrolling in the fall. A week later, Morgan receives a third offer, from the Global Scholars Program , which was her top choice internship! Morgan knows that she has two business days to decline one of the two active offers she currently holds (now, with Orientation Programs and Global Scholars Program, but knows her decision much sooner and sends an email almost immediately to thank both sites, and declines the offer from Orientation Programs. Morgan shares that the offer from the Global Scholars Program is her overall top choice and that she will accept it if she matriculates at U-M. Because she is no longer interested in considering an internship with Center for Educational Outreach, which she interviewed with but has not heard from, she will no longer be considered by them as a potential applicant, and they can extend an offer to someone else waiting to hear who may be a better fit for their role.
A few days later, Morgan logs in to wolverineaccess.umich.edu to enthusiastically accept her offer for admission to enter the fall master's cohort in CSHPE! At the same time, she emails both the Global Scholars Program and CSHPE to say she is pleased to accept that internship offer and is thrilled to further her professional experience in this area of student affairs with a focus on global justice.

Hello Katie,
With the April 15 deadline nearly here, this is a reminder that Monday is the final day to accept or decline a CSHPE internship. Congratulations if you have accepted an internship and confirmed your placement!
It is not a requirement to have an internship placement in order to accept your offer of admission to the Higher Education program. I will reach out if you matriculate and don't yet have a placement, so we can explore internship options together. Part-time students working in a higher education setting can submit a request to waive their internship requirement.
If you have not yet finalized your decision to attend Michigan via wolverineaccess.umich.edu, please accept or decline your offer of admission by Monday as well.
We are excited to welcome the incoming fall 2024 master's cohort soon!
Best,

Hello Katie,
We are excited to welcome you as a member of the fall 2024 master's cohort in the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education (CSHPE). Again, congratulations on confirming your enrollment at the University of Michigan!
During the upcoming weeks, we will share information as you prepare for fall, including for your course registration. You can expect to receive course planning instructions soon from Adam McChesney, your academic advisor. If you have questions about course registration, we will address these during a mid-May virtual info session. There is nothing you need to do now to prepare for your June registration appointment.
As we begin to plan ahead, please save the date for orientation! Orientation will take place in person on Aug. 21 and 22. The fall term begins on Aug. 26, 2024. Shortly before this, you will be paired with your CSHPE faculty advisor.
In the meantime, if you are a full-time student and do not yet have an internship placement, I will reach out soon so we can continue to explore internship options together.
We are very pleased for you to join the Marsal School community!

Hello Adam,
Congratulations and welcome to the Marsal Family School of Education. My name is Adam McChesney and I am so happy to support you as your official academic advisor.
You have a lot of people on your team here in Marsal: academic advising, faculty advising, career advising, funding support, among other areas here at U-M.
I want you to think of me, though, as the first person to come to when you’re just not sure what to do next. If you’re ever stuck and not sure how to proceed, I’ll be the one to help point you in the right direction.
Some of the main things I help with are planning your classes, checking in on your degree progress, verification letters you may need, and connecting you with support as a Michigan student.
If you need anything at all, there are two main ways for us to connect:
Send an email message to marsal.gradadvising@umich.edu
Schedule an appointment online in our system
I’m happy to help you starting right now if there’s anything you may need. In the meantime, soon you’ll receive a message from me about registering in June for your fall classes. There will be a Zoom event to look forward to in May and messages from me about preparing for registration.
Welcome again to Marsal; I’m looking forward to helping you have a great experience here.
Go Blue!

Hello Katie,
You’re probably getting more and more excited about starting your Master’s program here at Marsal Education. In May, we are going to get ready to register for classes.
Here is the save the date information for the Get Ready to Register event:
Date: Tuesday, May 14, 2024
Time: 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm Eastern Time
We will be meeting online via Zoom; U-M provides Zoom for all students. Read the Getting Started with Zoom U-M guide before the event.
Next week, Katie Madden and I will also be sending you a calendar invitation and Zoom link via your U-M email’s Google Calendar. We hope you can make it to learn all about your program and fall classes. If you are not familiar with Google Calendar, Google has a great online resource you should browse.
If you can’t make that session, that’s okay. We will be recording the session and sending it out to everyone. I’m also available to help with any questions you may have. You can email me questions or schedule an appointment.
Looking forward to seeing you on Zoom in May!

Good Afternoon,
We are pleased to have a strong group of international students who will be joining the fall 2024 CSHPE master's cohort! Welcome to U-M!
Below are several informational items for you:
1. Save the Date! Please join us for a virtual welcome meeting for incoming CSHPE MA international students, on May 16, 9-10 a.m. ET (Zoom link; passcode is CSHPE). This session is in addition to the 12 p.m. ET session on May 14 about course registration. If you are unable to attend either one, don't worry because we will send a recording afterward.
2. If you are still looking for an internship and are interested in working with students for whom English is not a first language, a part-time job opportunity with the U-M English Language Institute is here: ELI job posting. This position is posted through the U-M student employment site, as opposed to being a CSHPE-specific internship, so you would need to submit your application through the link provided.
3. Sidra Tariq and Hairou Ren are current CSHPE MA international students who are available to answer questions you have about Michigan or starting with CSHPE. You can email them directly.
Sidra Tariq (Pakistan), sidtariq@umich.edu
Hairou Ren (China), hairou@umich.edu
4. Below is a listing of incoming CSHPE MA international students who will be in your cohort. Please feel free to 'reply all' and introduce yourself to this group, and share if you are still looking for housing and a roommate. If you'd like to connect further from there (for example, if you may want to room together), you can consider doing so directly with one another.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
Best,
Katie

Zoom link (passcode is CSHPE)
During this time, we will discuss tips for planning your fall term schedule, before course registration opens on June 3. We will also share a recording afterward.
Please be sure to check your UMich email account regularly this summer, as we will be sending communications only to your University of Michigan email address.
If you have any questions, please let Adam McChesney or me know. We're excited to help you prepare for your time in CSHPE.
Best,
Katie

Good Afternoon,
Thank you to those who were able to join us for Tuesday's session on course registration. We hope that you have a good idea now of where to start as you build your fall schedule.
As a reminder, please block 3-4 p.m. on Tuesdays during the fall term for CSHPE MA sessions. It is an expectation that all new full-time MA students attend each week directly before your Intro to Higher Education course, so you should block this time when scheduling internship hours. These sessions are optional for part-time students.
Please see the following from Tuesday's Zoom discussion:
To access the recording, you will do so using an SSO (single sign-on) with your U-M credentials.
Adam and I look forward to being in touch over the next few months!
Best,
Katie

Hello incoming CSHPE students,
There have been a few questions about the CSHPE research requirement, so I wanted to send some key information for you to know.
EDUC 793 Introduction to Quantitative Methods in Educational Research
This course is required for students in the Public Policy and Instiutional Research concentrations. It is also open to all other concentrations, though, and should be considered if you are planning to pursue a doctoral degree in the future.
The course consists of a lecture and a lab, the times of which can be seen on the CSHPE Fall 2024 schedule.
The lecture does conflict with the Fall MA meetings, but that is okay. We will be providing key information from those meetings, so you will not miss out on key information if you are unable to attend due to class.
To register for the course, you must complete the Course Permission Request Form and indicate which lab section you want to take. We will then provide a permission override for you to register. If you do not submit this form, the system will block you from registering until that permission override is processed. When asked on the form, indicate you are requesting a "Departmental Content" type of permission.
EDUC 695 Research and Educational Practice
This is the typical course that CSHPE students take. When searching for this course in Wolverine Access, you will see there are four different sections.
Three of those sections you are unable to register for; they are for students in a different program. The only section you are able to register for as a CSHPE student is the Wednesday night section 003.
Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions, or run into any problems registering on June 3rd.
Kind regards,
Adam McChesney

June 5, 2024
Good Afternoon,
I hope you are enjoying the start to June as we move into summer!
Please note this important change with the fall 2024 schedule: Given the conflict with the statistics course, EDUC 793, we will be shifting our weekly CSHPE cohort sessions to Mondays, 12-1 p.m. (they were originally 3-4 p.m. on Tuesdays). Please do not schedule internship hours or other commitments during this time in the fall term.
Food won't be provided but you are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch or get a snack from the CSHPE pantry to enjoy during this time!
As a reminder, all new full-time CSHPE MA students are expected to attend. If you have questions about how this change in time affects your course schedule, please be in touch with Adam McChesney (soegradcoordinators@umich.edu | Schedule an advising appointment), or let me know.
Best,
Katie

I hope you are all having an amazing summer so far! My name is Lissette Gamez (she/her/ella) and I wanted to take some time to introduce myself as the Summer 2024 CSHPE Graduate Intern!
A little bit about me:
I am currently in my second year of the CSHPE M.A. program with a concentration in Diversity and Social Justice. I am an out-of-state student and graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in May 2023 with a Bachelor's in Sociology & Psychology. Proudly, I am a first-generation, Latina student with future goals of working with students of marginalized identities to support them throughout their journey in higher education. I am grateful to serve as a Graduate Program Coordinator at the Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs (MESA) and as a co-chair of the Graduate Organization of Students in Higher Education (GOSHE). I will also be starting a position as a Program Assistant at the Marsal School of Ed's Diversity, Inclusion, Justice, and Equity (dije) Office.
Gauging Availability
I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to serve as your CSHPE intern for the summer and hope that I can provide support, community, resources, and more to you all as you transition into this graduate program. To gain a better understanding of everyone's availability, I ask that you please fill out this when2meet to reflect your general availability during a normal week in the summer by July 6th. This will allow me to take everyone's availability into consideration when scheduling our virtual programming as best as possible. Please note that participating in these virtual programming opportunities is optional!
Office Hours
Additionally, I will be hosting two 'office hours' next week on Monday, July 1st from 1-2 PM EST and Wednesday, July 3rd from 7-8 PM EST on Zoom. Feel free to stop by to introduce yourself and chat! You are welcome to pop in as your availability allows and stay for as long (or short) as you would like. The information is below.

Please do not hesitate to share any and all questions/concerns that are currently on your mind. This zoom meeting will not be recorded so as to provide a space for you all to feel comfortable to ask questions and share your thoughts freely.
!!! Any questions or concerns you have are valid!!! There are no silly questions!!!
I am hopeful that having an open conversation with me and your fellow cohort members will help ease some stress or nervousness you may be experiencing, and especially allow you to understand that you are not alone in this journey!
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me. Additionally, if there are accommodations that would allow you to engage most fully in this event, please let us know.
Best,
