Congratulations on being recommended for admission to the Higher Education program at the University of Michigan! If you have not received an official notification of admission via email from the Rackham Graduate School, you should expect this in the coming week.
My name is Dr. Katie Madden, and I manage the master’s program in the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education (CSHPE). I am pleased to invite you to participate in the CSHPE internship placement in order to secure a 2023-2024 internship. All admitted students considering the CSHPE master's program full-time should participate in this placement, and must submit materials by February 20. Completing a two-term internship is a requirement for the MA degree in Higher Education.
Below, please find several action items:
To be considered for a CSHPE internship placement, you must submit all application materials by February 20. Please visit this CSHPE internship info page to learn more. The step-by-step explanation of internship placement is here. We encourage you to begin working on your materials soon! Internship placement involves several steps and asks you to submit 8-10 cover letters, in addition to other required items.
Block your calendar for 1-5 p.m. ET on March 13, for virtual interviews. If you have a conflict with any part of the interview afternoon during these hours, please note this in your registration (the link for this is included on the internship info page). Sites will work with you after you receive your interview schedule/list, by March 9, to schedule at an alternative time to meet.
Attend our admitted student webinar 12-1 p.m. ET this Thursday, February 9. This webinar will provide an overview of internship placement, and we will have time for questions. A Zoom webinar link is here (passcode CSHPE). This event is optional, and a recording will be shared afterward.
Finally, save the date for our in-person Campus Visit Day on Friday, March 10! Interviews for internship placement will take place virtually on Monday, March 13, to allow adequate time for you to return home. Even if you are unable to participate in activities on March 10, please take part in internship placement.
A current CSHPE student will reach out to you later this month! Please consider any questions on your mind about internship placement, living in Ann Arbor, and being a student in the Higher Education program.
With warm regards,
Katie Madden

Please join us for tomorrow’s webinar at 12-1 p.m. ET, for students admitted to the MA Higher Education program at the University of Michigan. A Zoom link is here (see email for passcode). This event is optional, and a recording will be shared afterward.
During this session we will discuss an overview of applying to CSHPE internships. All full-time master’s students should participate in the internship placement.
As you prepare your internship materials, below are some important reminders:
To be considered for a CSHPE internship placement, you must submit all application materials, including your 8-10 cover letters, registration form, and SparkHire recording, by February 20. Please visit this CSHPE internship page to learn more. The step-by-step explanation of internship placement is here.
Part-time students who are working full-time in a higher education setting can request to waive the internship requirement. Please email me if you'd like to discuss this further.
If you have confirmed that the University of Michigan is the right fit for you, please accept your offer of admission via wolverineaccess.umich.edu. When you do so, you are committing to attend U-M. You must matriculate before you accept an internship placement, and should do so no later than April 15.
We are pleased you are considering the University of Michigan and hope to see you in person for Campus Visit Day on March 10.
Best,
Katie Madden

You likely will be unable to interview with every site you ranked, and we may ask you to interview with some you did not initially include. We have many great positions this year, and you might not have considered one that could be a fit for you!

If you are an undocumented or DACAmented student, please see here for additional information, and be in touch with me as soon as possible if you have not already.
After March 13
We ask that you finalize your decision by April 15 regarding whether you will attend Michigan. You can do this via the Wolverine Access portal (wolverineaccess.umich.edu). The decision to matriculate, or accept your admission, indicates that you are no longer considering other academic programs and have chosen to be part of the 2023 CSHPE master’s cohort. If you have decided to attend a different graduate program, please let us know so we can offer internship opportunities to another student.
Hiring teams will begin extending offers on Wednesday, March 15, and will continue to do so for several weeks. The next steps in the internship placement process will be explained in greater detail soon after interviews. They are also outlined here.
Preparing for your Interviews
Please use the next several days to learn as much as you can about the internship sites with which you will be interviewing. We suggest you wear business casual attire for your interviews (i.e., you do not need to wear a suit). It may be helpful to practice in your interview space beforehand to ensure your internet connection is stable, lighting is adequate, etc. We recommend you consider sending thank you notes via email afterward.
Important Reminders
CSHPE internships provide valuable hands-on learning and an hourly salary. They do not include a waiver for the cost of tuition or health insurance.
If you have interviews scheduled and your plans change for fall, please let both hiring teams and me know. Because hiring teams are expecting to meet with you at the time on your schedule, we will need to communicate that you are no longer planning to attend the University of Michigan.
Both CSHPE and the internship hiring teams are excited to meet you soon!
Best,
Katie
March 13, 2023
The CSHPE virtual interview day has arrived! We hope you are enjoying your conversations as you meet with internship hiring teams.
By NOON tomorrow, please submit your post-interview rankings here.
Your rankings will not determine internship placements but will be available for hiring teams who are considering which candidate to extend an offer to.
You must accept your offer of admission before you accept an internship offer. To accept your offer of admission via Wolverine Access, which is to matriculate, indicates that you are no longer considering other graduate programs.
If you matriculate and do not yet have an internship, this is okay! We will work with you this spring and summer to secure a placement in line with your interests and goals.
You may accept only one CSHPE internship. After you start the fall term, you will have an opportunity to consider adding supplemental internships.
Internship offers will be extended starting this Wednesday, and continue for the next several weeks until April 15.
An overview of next steps in the internship placement after your interviews is explained here (#11 and Next Steps). Please also review this placement information. If you have questions, please let us know.
We were pleased to see many of you on Friday at the campus visit day. The SOE admissions and recruitment team will send virtual resources and recordings from the event in the next few days.
Best,
Katie
March 15, 2023
CSHPE internship teams will begin to extend offers today, and continue to do so during the upcoming few weeks!
When you receive an internship offer, please let the hiring team know within a day that you have seen their message. Several examples are available here to provide ideas for how you might consider replying.
It's possible that you may receive more than one internship offer. In this case, congratulations! You should accept only one internship, and review the two-day rule (see below). The two-day rule is also discussed in this webinar recording at 24:50. If you have multiple offers, CSHPE will send an email to remind you of next steps you must take.
Please let us know when you make a decision about an internship, or if you would like to talk through your options as you consider your professional goals and priorities--we would be happy to schedule time to meet via Zoom.
Best,
Katie
Reminder items:
You must accept your offer of admission before you accept an internship offer. To accept your offer of admission via Wolverine Access, which is to matriculate, indicates that you are no longer considering other graduate programs.
If you matriculate and do not yet have an internship, this is okay! We will work with you this spring and summer to secure a placement in line with your interests and goals.
You may accept only one CSHPE internship now. After you start the fall term, you will have an opportunity to consider adding supplemental internships.
Thank you to those who have submitted your post-interview internship rankings. If you have not yet done so, please submit these here, as soon as possible.
In some cases, a student may receive multiple internship offers. In order to ensure the internship placement does not pause, if you receive more than one offer, you will have two business days to decline the offers that are not your current most preferred offer. In other words, if you receive more than one internship offer, you must decline all but one, that which you identify as the placement you are most interested in when considering all the ones you have been offered. At that point in time, you are not required to commit to the single offer you are continuing to consider (that deadline is April 15).
To decline the offer(s) you are no longer considering, please send an email to each of the internship providers who have extended an offer to you, and copy cshpe.internships@umich.edu, to clearly identify which offer(s) are declining and which is your current most preferred offer, which you are continuing to consider. After you communicate which internship offer is not your current preferred offer and decline it, that internship position can then be offered to another candidate, who is likely eagerly waiting to hear. Another way to think about this is that you must decline all but one offer, but you need not accept an offer until April 15, per the agreement through the Council for Graduate Schools (see below).
If you know with certainty that your current preferred offer is your most preferred internship site out of all the internship sites, and that you will accept your offer with that specific internship site if you matriculate at U-M, you may communicate that to the internship provider and CSHPE. This will prevent you from receiving unnecessary communication from additional internship sites who could extend an offer to you, which you would not be interested in. You are not required to express that your current preferred offer is your overall top choice.
Each student in the master's program can pursue only one internship at the start of their program, so you should carefully consider what your priorities are in your internship. Please contact Dr. Madden if you have multiple offers and would like to talk through your decision!
Examples of sample text for your email to accept, decline, or continue considering an internship, when the two-day rule is relevant, are here.
Below is a possible example scenario:
Morgan interviews with four internship sites on Campus Visit Day: the Spectrum Center, Dean of Students Office, Newnan Advising Center, and Intergroup Relations (IGR). On March 15, she is excited to receive two internship offers, from the Spectrum Center and Intergroup Relations. Morgan understands she must identify which is her current preferred offer that she has by March 17, because this is two days later. In other words, Morgan can only continue to consider one offer, although she understands that she does not need to accept an offer until April 15, or sooner, if possible.
Morgan decides to decline the offer from Intergroup Relations and email both internship sites, copying cshpe.internships@umich.edu, and thanking both sites for their offers. As Morgan continues to think seriously about her options for graduate school, she is leaning heavily toward matriculating at U-M but has not made a final decision yet regarding where she will be enrolling in the fall. Her current 'active' offer is with the Spectrum Center.
A week later, Morgan receives a third offer, from the Dean of Students Office, which was her top choice internship! Morgan knows that she has two business days to decline one of the two active offers she currently holds (now, with the Spectrum Center and Dean of Students Office), but knows her decision much sooner and sends an email almost immediately to thank both sites and decline the offer from the Spectrum Center. Morgan emails CSHPE.internships@umich.edu to share that the offer from the Dean of Students Office is her overall top choice and that she will accept it if she matriculates at U-M. She has decided that she is no longer interested in considering an internship with the Newnan Advising Center, who she interviewed with but has not heard from. As a result, she will no longer be considered by Newnan as a potential applicant, and the Newnan team can extend an offer to someone else waiting to hear who may be a fit for their role.
A few days later, Morgan logs in to wolverineaccess.umich.edu to enthusiastically accept her offer for admission to enter the fall 2023 master's cohort in CSHPE! At the same time, she emails both the Dean of Students Office and cshpe.internships@umich.edu to say she is pleased to accept the internship offer with the Dean of Students team and is thrilled to further her professional experience with them.
April 14, 2023
With the April 15 deadline upon us, this is a reminder that tomorrow is the final day to accept or decline a CSHPE internship. Congratulations if you have accepted an internship and confirmed your placement!
It is not a requirement to have an internship placement in order to accept your offer of admission to the Higher Education program. I will reach out, if you matriculate and don't yet have a placement, so we can continue to explore internship options together. Part-time students working in a higher education setting can submit a request to waive their internship requirement.
If you have not yet finalized your decision to attend Michigan, please accept or decline your offer of admission by tomorrow as well.
We are excited to welcome the incoming fall 2023 master's cohort soon!
Best,
Katie

We are excited to welcome you as a member of the fall 2023 master's cohort in the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education (CSHPE). Again, congratulations on confirming your enrollment at the University of Michigan!
During the upcoming weeks, we will share information as you prepare for fall, including for course registration, details regarding your faculty and staff advisor, and ways we can be in touch with one another. You can expect to receive course planning instructions by early June. There is no need for you to take steps regarding your fall course schedule prior to this time.
One important action item you can do now is to send your official transcripts to the Rackham Graduate School. You can do this by following these instructions.
Please save the date for orientation! Orientation will take place in-person on August 23 and 24. The fall term begins on August 28.
If you are a full-time student and do not yet have an internship placement, I will reach out soon so we can continue to explore internship options together.
We are very pleased for you to join the Marsal School community!
Best,
Katie

July 25, 2023
Good Afternoon,
We are excited to see you at the Marsal School for orientation in just over four weeks!
If you have not done so yet, please remember to register for orientation by August 13. We hope you can attend both orientation days, August 23 and 24.
In addition, below are several next steps you should take to prepare for orientation and the new term:
Plan to attend MA Monday Meetings 12-1 p.m. during fall term, during which you are invited to bring a brown bag lunch. Do not schedule work or other commitments during this time each week! As a first-year CSHPE MA student, you are expected to attend these sessions. A tentative schedule of topics for us is here.
Read this list of important CSHPE MA student dates, and add these now to your calendar.
Start to review the CSHPE MA Handbook. This handbook includes important resources, policies, and expectations that you should become familiar with as a student in the Center. Many forms and documents linked in the handbook are on the Marsal School Intranet. (If you are unable to access the Intranet now, please check back again soon.)
Be in contact with your internship supervisor. If you have not been in touch with them this summer, now is a good time to ask about when you will complete hiring paperwork. You should also begin to discuss your start date and work schedule. If possible, avoid work hours during orientation on August 23 and 24.
By now you should have registered for fall term courses. If you have questions about course requirements or class schedule, contact our Marsal School academic advisor, Adam McChesney (soegradcoordinators@umich.edu; scheduling link). We will share details regarding your faculty advisor closer to the fall term.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact CSHPE student intern Liliana Cespedes (lvbravo@umich.edu), the academic advising team, or me.
With warm regards,
Katie
