vSmith is a virtual computer lab that provides essential software in one convenient place for Smith School students, faculty and staff, and can be accessed at any time, from any computer, anywhere in the world. The applications and desktops provided run on servers in the Smith IT data center and are available 24/7 so you can work on your schedule, from wherever you want.
Open the VMware Horizon Client from the Start menu (if you are using Windows) or from Finder (if you are using a Mac). When the client opens, double-click the server listed. If you can't see a server, click the Add Server button and enter desktop.rhsmith.umd.edu and click Connect
Note: If you do not have the Horizon client installed then visit VMware's download page and download the appropriate client. During the installation you may be prompted to enter a server name, please use desktop.rhsmith.umd.edu. You can find detailed instructions for installing the Horizon client on our installation information page, including if you receive a server certificate error during setup.
You will then see the login window, type in your University Directory ID (e.g. jsmith127) and password. This is the same information you use to login to other University systems such as Canvas, ARES, Testudo etc.
You will then be shown all the applications and/or desktops that you are entitled to use. Double-click the vSmith application or desktop of your choice and it will open as it would normally and you can begin using it.
As you're using a temporary computer in our data center, you should not save any of your work to the vSmith desktop, but instead to your own computer or shared cloud storage such as Google Drive or Box. See this page for more information on saving your work.
