Parren J. Mitchell Art-Sociology Building
The Art-Sociology Building, which opened in 1976, was named for Parren J. Mitchell in November 2015. Mr. Mitchell was the first African American graduate student to take all of his classes on campus and receive a degree, a master's in sociology in 1952. He later served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1971 to 1986, representing Maryland's 7th District, and was one of the founders of the Congressional Black Caucus.
