Puzzled: Stories from the Intersection
Abstract
Co-occurring Substance Use Disorders (SUD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) remain critically understudied, resulting in a lack of specialized care for individuals navigating both conditions. Much of existing autism research centers on children—not adults—perpetuating stigmas through gaps in understanding and visibility.
My capstone project, Puzzled: Stories from the Intersection, aims to fill this gap by creating a zine that amplifies the voices of an underrepresented population. Drawing from both my personal experiences as an autistic adult and a comprehensive review of existing literature on ASD, SUD, and adult autism, this project seeks to illuminate our unique challenges, strengths, and stories.
The zine is intended for neurodiverse adults, individuals confronting their own stigmas, and those interested in the arts. By blending personal narrative with research, my goal is to foster community, encourage empathy, and dismantle harmful stereotypes surrounding adults with autism.
