What Is This Project About?
This research project aims to investigate how today's younger generations prepare for difficult interpersonal communication in their lives, with or without AI support. Here, difficult interpersonal communication refers to a spoken or written interaction with another person in which you need to address a sensitive, uncomfortable, or consequential issue. Such communication may involve disagreement, criticism, conflict, request, apology, or another situation in which what you say could affect your relationship with that person or the outcome of your interaction with that person.
As a participant in this research, you will be asked to prepare your communication scripts — that is, draft what you would say and how you would say it — for 15 scenarios provided by the research team. You will complete the first 14 scenarios over two weeks, with one scenario assigned each day. You will complete the final scenario one week after the initial two-week period.
Through this engaging journey, you will:
Practice navigating challenging aspects of interpersonal communication across a variety of scenarios;
Experience how generative AI can assist communication preparation; and
Make a valuable contribution to the empirical understanding of human-AI relationships, both today and in the future!
Who Is Qualified to Participate?

We invite individuals who meet the following eligibility requirements to participate:
Be between 20 and 35 years old;
Be based in the United States;
Be a native English speaker;
Have completed or are completing a bachelor's degree (e.g., BA, BS, BBA, BFA);
Have daily access to a computer for the duration of the study.

Below is an illustration of the required participation timeline:
Day 1 (45-60 min): Background survey, communication preparation task for scenario 1, and tutorial for upcoming tasks;
Day 2-14 (approx. 30 min per day): Communication preparation tasks for scenarios 2-14, with one scenario assigned each day;
Day 15 (approx. 30 min): Communication preparation task for scenario 15, taking place one week after the initial two-week period.

Upon completing all required steps, participants will receive a $111 Tango Gift Card as compensation for their effort. The gift card can be redeemed with retailers of the participant's choice.
