Biography & Personal Statement
Nicolas Martinez is a Sophomore from Owings Mills, MD, studying Economics at the University of Maryland. His interests include music and literature. His interests in all three topics culminate in how these arts can cause movements, important cultural developments, and revolutions that change the world by exploring how the arts affect the people who partake in them. Whether these effects be mental, social, philosophical, etc., change and growth are his focus on how these arts can change the world. He emphasizes how these arts can help and drive disadvantaged people by listening and using their stories as inspiration for his own art, being seen through the demo tapes of music he creates in his bedroom, and if he is lucky, with his band, Bedrock, back in Catonsville. Using the same emphasis, he plans to start writing seriously once he finds the time. He plans to write about his own culture and the obstacles his parents had to go through while living in a turbulent Peru in the 80's and 90's. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in Economics, he plans to use his interest in literature and his emphasis on giving exposure to stories of the disadvantaged by working in a publishing firm so he can promote his ideas and the stories of others on a grander scale.
As a College Park Arts Scholar, Nic intends to explore his musical interests through his culminating Capstone project, a beat tape, that is set to be completed in his second semester of Sophomore year. He is to work with other people who have similar artistic and moral interests to him to create such a final project. He also looks forward to attending field trips to explore the arts within his new community of College Park, MD. He is excited to meet guest speakers who have implemented art into their professional lives and to take inspiration from them. As part of his university experience, he is a member of the university's Terrapin Beats society and Musical Jam Club, which allows him to express his musical desires. Along with graduating and being prepared to work in the workforce, his ultimate goal to accomplish by the end of his time at the University of Maryland is to complete a polished beat-tape to share with his family, friends, and the world.
