The Threads of a Generation

Abstract

Quilting is a deeply rooted culture of storytellers and artists. It is mostly seen as “women's work” or just a hobby, but people gather in different communities to share their quilts with the world. From an African American founded town in Alabama to the National Mall in DC, each quilt harbors a message that is deliberately woven into the fabric of the quilt. Quilting is an intricate art form that can demonstrate grief, growth, and history through curation of fabrics, deliberate stitches, and assembly of the pieces. My project explores these topics by showing the growth of my life through old t-shirts and fabric scraps. The quilt demonstrates the boundary between a seemingly boundless childhood with rigid adulthood.
