Math Department Graduate Student Council
In AY 2023-24 I served on the UMD Math department graduate student council, which (among other things) advocates for the graduate students in the department through meetings with the department chair and academic program directors and facilitates community-building among the students through the organizing of joint seminars and social events for graduate students. I was the Mathematics Program Student Liason, and as such I facilitated communication between the math graduate students and department, and represented the students' interests to the department and to the university administration as a whole.
Spectra
I am a member of Spectra, the association for LGBTQ+ mathematicians and their allies. I am on the outlist and am a member on the individual level, and am committed to supporting the representation and development of LGBTQ+ individuals in mathematics, as well as cultivating inclusive and diverse classrooms and mathematics communities. I can be reached via email for comment on the climate for LGBTQ+ individuals at my university.
Directed Reading Program
At UMD I mentored for the Directed Reading Program, a program that pairs undergraduate students with graduate students for a semester-long reading project. The mentor helps the undergraduate choose a project and a book, and meets with the undergraduate weekly to discuss progress and answer questions. At the end of the semester, the students give a presentation on what they learned to other students in the program.
In 2023 and 2024 I served as this program's Vice President, which means that I assisted with forming the student pairings, keeping individual projects on track through communication with mentors and mentees, purchasing books for students, and scheduling and running end-of-semester presentations.
Math is for everyone; the program is open to students with any level of math background knowledge. A list of students I mentored and their presentation titles can be found on my CV. If you are an undergraduate at UMD and have questions about the program, please email me.
