04-B: Accessing UMD Virtual Desktop and Setting up Files 

If you are a student taking PSYC300 at the University of Maryland, we require you to use the R installation available to you through the UMD Virtual Desktop. Using the versions of R and RStudio on the virtual desktop will ensure that the .Rmd files we share with you will work as expected and your instructors will not have to troubleshoot installation or version issues on a variety of different computer systems.

"You can use the Remote Desktop client for Android to work with Windows apps and desktops directly from your Chromebook that supports the Google Play Store.  The Android client supports Chromebooks with ChromeOS 53 and later. Learn more about Android applications on Chrome here

Users connecting from Chromebooks running older operating systems or which do not support Android application should connect with the web portal."

R software is easy to install on a variety of computers running different installations of Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems.  You can download R at the following website: https://www.r-project.org/

RStudio is an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for the R language. This allows programmers to code in R in a friendly and user-friendly graphical user interface. There are other R IDEs, but RStudio is our favorite and also the most popular. You can download RStudio at the following website: https://www.rstudio.com/. In addition to the video below, you can also refer to a .pdf file of instructions.
