Dr. Hongjie Liu is a professor of epidemiology who graduated from the UCLA School of Public Health with a doctoral degree in epidemiology. He is a former Chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the UMD School of Public Health (July 2017 - August 2022). His research primarily focuses on the social and behavioral aspects of HIV/AIDS, the epidemiology of infectious diseases, and research methodology. He has expertise in studying social and risk networks of disease transmission, intervention strategies, epidemic modeling, sampling hidden populations, and advanced analytical techniques such as structural equation modeling, actor-partner interdependence modeling, psychometric assessment, and association modeling.
Dr. Liu has been actively involved in research since 1997, serving as a Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI, or consultant in 27 research projects. His research has been funded by prestigious institutions, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR), and the International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID). In 2014, his NIH research awards ranked him 15th among all University of Maryland faculty in terms of funding.
To date, Dr. Liu has authored a textbook and published 119 peer-reviewed papers, including 108 publications in English journals (h-index: 39, i10-index: 87) and 19 in Chinese journals. He has been invited to review grant applications by NIH, NSF, and the Hong Kong Health and Medical Research Fund. He is also dedicated to education, teaching intermediate and advanced epidemiologic methods courses to master's and doctoral students.
