Nip of The Tit is a project based on the Free the Nipple Movement. Men can freely walk out without a shirt and be completely fine, but a woman could not. The crochet boobs are the centerpiece and are ironically covered up by fabric except for the nipples. The idea is covering up as per society’s rules, with the exception of any items that may be considered inappropriate. Lastly, the purpose of the cross-stitched boob patches are to desexualize women’s bodies by giving them out to individuals and allowing them to display them wherever they wish.
The maternity crisis facing Black women in many parts of the world represents a profound and urgent challenge within healthcare systems. Structural racism, implicit biases within healthcare settings, socioeconomic disparities, and inadequate access to quality prenatal and postnatal care are among the key factors contributing to this crisis. My artwork addresses this crisis through portraying the fragility black mothers exude when their lives are placed in the hands of biased health professionals. However, I emphasize the importance of support from people of all identity and backgrounds to protect black mothers and address an unprecedented killer of black women.
Grace created this embroidery piece in order to convey her belief that Self-Help is a counterproductive idea without the prerequisite of emotional healing. We are worthy even not as our “best selves,” and there is no “right way to live.” Self-Help has good intentions, but it promotes feelings of inferiority by giving over generalized advice, which causes anxiety and low self-worth in its followers. Grace’s “craftivism” for this project is conveying mental health advocacy in a tactile way.
In my embroidery, you can see a flourishing tree. However, instead of typical leaves it has the recycling logo symbolically placed into the branches. This artwork depicts the beauty of what nature could look like if everyone took care of it. This includes using reusable bags, as paper bags are just as bad for the environment as plastic bags. Although this ' the only example, it is a step in the right direction of reducing our carbon footprint on the world.
The goal of this project is to draw awareness to endangered animals through the medium of cross-stitching. The artwork features the footprints of two endangered species, one of a Java Rhinoceros and one of a Bengal Tiger. This work asks the audience to consider how they can do their part to protect these endangered animals, and to consider how the preservation of them will affect the wildlife of the world for generations to come.
For this activism art project cross-stitch material was used with different shades of pink, focusing on gender equality and challenging Machismo stereotypes. Cross stitch offers a traditional yet powerful medium for conveying this message, therefore, pink threads symbolize the gender binary while breaking stereotypes. This work enhances this message visually, encouraging dialogue on gender equality's importance.
This project is to bring awareness to the rising antisemitism being faced by the Jewish population around the world. The title “A Proud Star” is stitched in morse code on the piece to highlight the importance of recognizing our religious differences. Having differences allows for societal growth and extends empathy towards others that may come from different backgrounds. By embracing our own heritage we can become a more culturally diverse population that respects new traditions and perspectives.
The goal of this artwork is to address the issue of genocide, which has gained more traction and awareness during this time. The colors of the thread were chosen intentionally to correspond to the flags of countries like Congo, Palestine, and Sudan, to commemorate the lives of innocent people who died unfairly. Genocide is a violation of human rights and its practice should be stopped.
What impact do you have on being the light? Have you ever been in an atmosphere, where someone else just gave you a smile, and it encouraged you, and then you passed on that smile to someone else, and then so on? Being the light doesn’t take much. As some may say the small things matter, and you can make a difference just that quick. You never realize how far a smile can go a long way. Be the light.
