Althea Woodland Nursing Home in Silver Spring Maryland is nestled in the secluded woods of Montgomery county. They have a mission to provide a safe and comfortable environment as their residents age. While their facility had beautiful large windows overlooking wooded areas and open spaces, they lacked a bit of color on their walls! I spoke with a nurse who told me many of the residents didn't get many (or any) visitors and had a tendency to get lonely and experience declining mental health. I knew this would be the place to bring my artwork.
Finding the Right Space
Below are pictures of us hanging artwork in the shared common room of Althea Woodland Nursing Home!
This is a space for residents to come and parktake in group acitivities, socialize, or simply enjoy their surroundings.
While the room itself had a lot of natural light, there was little color and felt a bit somber.
We choose a side of the room to hang some bright and colorful artwork for the residents to view during their days!
Here are more pictures of the facility. There is little decor in the main hallways and shared areas and even less in patient rooms.
I was unable to get pictures due to patient privacy but some of the art was able to be hung in individual rooms for patinents who needed it most!
Electric Florals
Acrylic
I choose a floral composition as scenes of nature have proven to be relaxing and stimulate positive emotions even when only being portrayed on paper!
Behind the Colors -
Pink: compassion and sincerity
Purple: calm, stability, & represents wisdom and spirituality
Orange: energy, enthusiasm, and warmth
(Orange + Purple are complementary colors and are visually pleasing when positioned adjacent to each other)
Blue: serenity and peace
Complementary Composition
Acrylic
Inspired Work
While the colors of this work are still crucial to the piece, the appeal of the painting is on the bold shapes and outlines. Inspired by Piet Mondrian's "Composition with Red, Blue, and Yellow" which featured bright colors outlined in a bold black.
Saturated Still Life
Acrylic
This piece took on a bit more of an abstract method. Shapes, colors, and images that done quite make sense next to each other but work in tandem to create something that is fun to look at.
Bright Blue: high energy, alertness, and intense creativity
Green: balance and growth
Lilac: tranquility, nostalgia, and confidence
Yellow: joy, optimism, and energy
Outlined Bloom
Acrylic
I choose another floral composition as it was fitting with the theme of the nursing home and the bold color outlines really made the scene pop! This was inspired by pop artists like Andy Warhol.
Behind the Colors -
Violet: wisdom, spirituality, and creativity
Orange: energy, enthusiasm, and warmth
Golden Yellow: intense joy, optimism, and warmth
