In creating this project, I have used many mindfulness practices for noticing and capturing nature and I have become more in tune with my environment as a result. Part of this was influenced by lessons in CPSA250 on managing time and creativity, particularly on avoiding multitasking. By staying fully engaged and present in one project, I could get a great deal of work done at once while also fulfilling the purpose of the project which is to improve mental health and learn to slow down. Additionally, by using the Time Boxing technique I was able to navigate around the large workload that comes with being a Mechanical Engineering major and prioritize my work effectively. I would color code a planner each week filled with deadlines, exams, homework, and chore schedules which greatly helped me in planning time to work on this project and other assignments when I otherwise would have gotten overwhelmed by my workload and been less successful in my studies.
When building my capstone, the first step was taking a reference photo, creating concept sketches, or finding a location to paint in person of a scene that uplifted or inspired me. Then I started each painting by breaking down the environment into the fundamental colors and lighting I desired to embody the mood of the scene. Over time I added layer upon layer, building over these rough colors until I had smooth, blended skies and backgrounds filled with vibrant colors and lots of detail as my final outcome.
