Mixed Media: PET-G Plastic, aluminum
Pearl grew up on the Eastern Shore of Maryland working on a 36 acre family farm run by her parents. Through her parents' work as academics in various horticulture/agriculture fields as well as living in a rural, agrarian community, she developed a love for the nature surrounding her.
Illuminate is a multi-media sculpture composed entirely of repurposed and recyclable materials. The vessel, made of various aluminum cans, is reminiscent of a flower planter with various flowers composed of PET plastic growing out of it. LED lights illuminating the work from below are meant to give an ever-changing, naturally artificial appearance that brings to light the replacement of our natural environment with man-made, artificial materials such as plastic and metal. Through this piece, Pearl hopes to share her passion and background with nature and bring to light a little more awareness for the effect that everyday human life has on the environment.
