Throughout this project what I have learned the most is that no matter how much I try to plan things out, I will always discover new things about my artwork along the way. As I tried to write this EP, I sat down and tried to iron out all of the small little details of each song before writing. I had never written music this way before, but I thought I would try a new method to get things done more efficiently.
However, in the end, I landed back in the same process I’ve always had. I sat down and tried to follow my meticulously planned out roadmaps for each song, but while I was writing I would discover new and interesting ways to talk about my subject matter that I never would have thought of before starting to write. I have very solidly learned my lesson now, that the process for writing and the process of discovering my one feelings on my subject matter are one in the same, and to try to iron out all of my ideas out before hand is to close myself off to what I might discover while writing.
The idea of "killing your darlings" really helped with this, specifically that no idea is so precious that I should hold onto it at all costs. I had to do a lot of that while conceptualizing the EP, and in the edn I think I ended up with a better end product because of it.
