I utilized skills learned throughout CPSA250 to aid in the development and completion of this project. One skill in particular that was useful was the idea of iteration, and specifically “killing my darlings.” To prototype my project, I took inspiration from Heather’s image sheets. I created image sheets throughout the brainstorming and experimenting process of this project to help gather ideas on things such as mediums, composition, color, and design. Creating the image sheets definitely helped the way I worked by finding as much inspiration as possible and putting it together. By seeing all of the material for each respective category together in one sheet, I was able to better picture how I was going to combine both medium and content to make the final product. I learned that it is actually quite easy to “kill my darlings” when all of my ideas are laid out together. By comparing each idea directly against the others in the sheet, I could clearly see which ones didn’t fit the idea of my final product very well and could eliminate those right away.
I used these ideas learned in CPSA250 further in my use of trial and error throughout the creation of the final piece. Since I was inexperienced in some of the mediums and techniques used, part of the process was experimenting with them. Seeing how they could be used independently and in relation to each other was an important part of the process before and during the construction of the final piece. This included things like seeing whether the construction paper layered on-top of the oil pastel would work better than using oil pastel on the construction paper and pasting it onto the canvas from there.
