Doing this project really taught me a lot about myself and how my creative process works. I thought that I’d be able to work on it slowly and steadily throughout the year, and I did to an extent, but I also did most of my work in bursts. I realized I was most effective when I was able to get rid of distractions around me to focus on my project, so I would do this for about an hour sporadically throughout the week to get work done. One technique I also used that I learned in CPSA250 was that of “Killing Your Darlings” because there was a lot left on the cutting room floor when editing my documentary.
I definitely filmed a lot more than I was going to use, which I intended, but there was some footage I tried to squeeze in that just couldn’t make it. After having a faculty conference, I was given the advice to shorten the run time to around 10 minutes instead of my intended 25-30 minutes. I thought this was a great idea to make the content flow better and more digestible, but this came at the cost of clips I had already filmed and sequences/segments I wanted to include.
