I have been lucky enough to complete three Global Experiences the combination of which give me a Gold experience. All of these have allowed me to develop into a Globally competent engineer, something that is critical in order to tackle any of the Grand Challenges.
Study abroad at the University of Porto (Portugal)
At my time in Porto, I took Mechanical Engineering Master's courses at the Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP). During my Composites Systems course, my project was on integrating composite materials into offshore wind energy systems. This is tied into renewable energy which is tied quite closely to clean water access.
I was the only native English speaker at my faculty, which meant that I was immersed in a variety of cultures. Although my classes were taught in English, I had colleagues who were Portuguese, German, Swedish, Czech, Brazilian, and so on. Being in Portugal taught me so much about myself and it taught me how to adapt, think on my feet, and it opened my mind to even more cultures than I had previously been exposed to.
Winter study abroad at the University of Kassel (Germany)
While at Kassel, I took a class on renewable energy sources during which we had seminars on a variety of energy sources as well as ways to tie renewable energy to water filtration systems which directly links to my challenge. This experience immersed me in a new culture which was both scary and amazing at the same time.
Global Engineering Course
Through this class, I was able to work with a team of students from Porto which taught me how to work on a diverse team, as well as to work with a time zone difference. This course also led me to my Gold experience where I will be studying with the same students I worked with during this course.
