The Center for Peace, Democracy and Development (CPDD) has funding to support expenses related to dissertation research that aligns with CPDD’s key initiatives and/or the focal areas of CPDD working groups/labs. Funding may be used for pilot/preliminary research expenses, dissertation fieldwork, participation in methodology or other research-related workshops, or living expenses while writing up research.
Awards are typically for approximately $1000-1500 and will be awarded once per semester on a competitive basis. CPDD will normally fund 2-3 awards per year.
Applications are accepted December 1st and May 1st each year. Funding awarded for the December 1st deadline must be used by June of the following calendar year. Funding awarded for the May 1st deadline may only be used between July 1 of the same calendar year and June 30 of the following calendar year. For the purposes of AY 2025-26 only, the first deadline will be January 15 instead of December 1.
Applicants must be PhD students in Global Governance & Human Security or Center Fellows at CPDD. Proposals should include a 1-page description of and rationale for the activity being funded, a 1-paragraph explanation of how the activity being funded aligns with CPDD key initiatives or lab focal areas, and a budget.

The Center for Peace, Democracy and Development (CPDD) has funding to support expenses related to research and professional development that aligns with CPDD’s key initiatives and/or the focal areas of CPDD working groups/labs. Senior fellows and faculty fellows (including NTTs) are eligible to apply. Priority for these funds will be for expenses that are not covered by other available university or department funding sources, and/or for people who do not have access to other sources of funding. When relevant (e.g., for faculty fellows), applicants applying for CPDD funds must have already applied for (or used up) DOFFAR and/or other MGS/university sources of funding for which the requested expense would be eligible. Conference travel expenses are not eligible, as these can be covered by FSU or DOFFAR funds. Funding may be used for research expenses (including publication fees), software/data, books, hiring grad student workers, professional expenses, capacity-building workshops, or for instructional/pedagogical expenses, or similar needs.
