What is the UMass Amherst Carbon Zero Alliance?

The purpose of this group is to support decarbonization at UMass and in the broader UMass community. We are a group of faculty, librarians, students, staff, and alumni who aim to mitigate climate change, support democratic decision making, engage in advocacy and decision making to advance sustainability and justice, and keep our leaders and institutions accountable to these goals. We formed in 2025.

Why Decarbonize?

We are the flagship campus of the University of Massachusetts, whose vision is to “advance the boundaries of creating and using knowledge, leading the way toward a just and sustainable future for all.” To realize this vision, we seek a carbon neutral campus as an example from which others can learn and a beacon of inspiration for the Common Good.

Objectives for the Carbon Zero Alliance:

Our goals are:

To ensure UMass keeps its promise to reach carbon neutrality on an accelerated timescale through research, education, and advocacy for broader, deeper, more democratic, and more environmentally just decarbonization wherever and whenever possible.
To advocate for transparency and full engagement from the UMass administration as they work towards the first goal.
To use the full passion and expertise of the larger UMass community in forming and implementing a campus decarbonization plan.
To use a sustainable and carbon neutral UMass campus to educate and empower a generation of students to repeat our success in their own communities.
