Idioms/proverbs/phrasal verbs
An idiom is an expression which might be a phrase or a sentence whose meaning cannot be deduced from that of the individual words. An American, for example, would say "break a leg" to mean good luck and not to refer to the literal meaning of the expression.
Although idioms can be complicated and require a lot of familiarity with the English language, they are very intriguing and essential in your English learning because they allow you to express yourself in a creative way. They also make you more comfortable and more confident with your conversational skills. For example, instead of saying "we agree", you can say "we speak the same language" or you might use the idiom "someone spilled the beans" to mean that "someone revealed the secret". It is true that idioms might be complex expressions, but they are funny to learn.
Using idioms not only improves your conversational skills, but it also shows to native speakers that you understand the cultural significance and the context in which an idiom is used. The more you use them in your spoken or written English, the more familiar with the language you sound.
As idiomatic expressions help you explore the language more deeply, you can consider them as the flavor you add to your knowledge of English.
