2016

plasma50+@um, 26 March 2016

In conjunction with the UM 111th Anniversary and the SEnergy@UM celebration, Plasma50+@UM was organized by the Plasma Technology Research Centre on 26th March 2016. We celebrated our 54 years of Plasma Research in UM by calling on our alumni to touch base, re-establish our network linkage as well as to build new bridges. The event was proudly attended by our plasma alumni and friends who are academics in international and local institutions (National University of Singapore and Singapore University of Technology and Design, Universiti Malaya, Multimedia University, Universiti Tenaga Nasional, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, Kolej Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, Nilai University, INTI International University), officer in the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, and personnel in the industries (Ideatools, UniOptics88, MotorolaSolutions). The training in Plasma Research Laboratory (as was previously known) stood them in good stead as evident in the successful endeavours of our alumni members. The younger generation of plasma researchers were enlightened on the roots of plasma research in UM via two invited talks: “Early Days of UM Plasma and the Lee Code Today” by Prof SH Saw and Emeritus Prof S Lee, and “Development of Plasma Technology at University of Malaya - a research exploration” by Prof CS Wong. It is important to know our roots to appreciate the efforts and contributions from early plasma researchers who helped to build plasma research in UM, and to learn from their experience to bring us to greater heights. The event culminated in an appreciation session for our dedicated and long-serving Professor CS Wong (33 years) and assistant engineer Mr Jasbir Singh (38 years) who retired early this year.
