UM Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Mobility Program

This 2-week program covers a wide range of sustainability topics, including an introduction to the Sustainability@UM, Regional Centre of Expertise on ESD, EcoCampus living labs, citizen science, and actual sustainability intervention in different contexts.

24th July 2023Day 1 of activities provides a foundation for participants to explore the principles of sustainability, understand the significance of the SDGs, and foster teamwork and creativity in finding sustainable solutions to real-world challenges. The engaging and interactive sessions aim to inspire and empower individuals to make a positive impact on their environment and society.

25th July 2023Participants start the day with an exciting kayak tour at Universiti Malaya. They explore the serene Varsity Lake and UM Green Belt, gaining insights into preserving water bodies and ecosystems. After the tour, they enjoy a engage in a citizen scientist exploration, contributing to research on waterways and environmental conservation.

26th July 2023Participants engage in a unique and interactive Makerslab MRANTI experience, facilitated by Mr. William Alvisse, Operations Director of STEM 4 All Makerspace, Malaysia. This activity at Makerslab offers participants a unique opportunity to explore emerging technologies, foster creativity, and gain practical experience in 3D printing and Virtual Reality. The hands-on sessions enable them to discover the potential applications of these innovative technologies in various industries and fields.

27th July 2023Participants embark on a full-day journey in Putrajaya, starting with a technical briefing at Perbadanan Putrajaya on the importance of Wetland conservation and preservation. They then visit Wetland Putrajaya, immersing themselves in the beauty of the wetland and understanding its role in supporting biodiversity. Then proceed to Masjid Putrajaya

28th July 2023Participants have the chance to tour the Higher Education Center of Excellence (HICoE) UM Power Energy Dedicated Advanced Centre (UMPEDAC) at Wisma R&D, UM. Following this enlightening visit, they move to take part in a session with the Ungku Aziz Centre for Development Studies, receiving valuable insights into the field of development studies. This activity offers a distinctive opportunity for participants to delve into pioneering research and acquire knowledge from renowned academic centers of excellence.

31st July 2023Participants gather at Rimba Ilmu, UM, warmly welcomed by Dr. Yong Kien Thai, Coordinator of Rimba Ilmu. They embark on an informative tour, exploring the herbarium, conservatory, garden, and exhibition areas, immersing in the diverse beauty of the surroundings. The day's program takes an eco-conscious turn as they join the Botanical Garden Clean-up activity, actively contributing to preserving nature, fostering a sense of responsibility. This enriching experience combines educational insights with hands-on involvement in Rimba Ilmu's preservation, fostering appreciation for nature and instilling stewardship towards our ecosystems.

1st August 2023Participants embark on a visit to Sungai Klang, Klang, for a River Educational-Trip Package organized under the Selangor Maritime Gateway Project. They gain valuable insights into the importance of river conservation and sustainability. After an engaging morning, the day continues with an informative talk on "The Role of NGOs in Advocating ESD" (Education for Sustainable Development) by EcoKnights, inspiring participants to take proactive steps for environmental betterment. This activity offers participants a comprehensive understanding of river conservation, sustainability, and the vital role of NGOs in advocating for a greener future.

2nd August 2023Participants will learn sustainable waste management.After the discussion, they tour the UM Zero Waste Campaign (UMZWC) Site and learn about trash management. Next, participants will upcycle unwanted materials into useful and artistic things. They then visit EcoSurau APIUM at the Academy of Islamic Studies at UM, a sustainable and eco-friendly house of prayer. The activity teaches waste management, sustainability, and upcycling, inspiring participants to live more sustainably.

3rd August 2023Participants start their day with a tour of Kuala Selangor Nature Park, learning about the different flora and animals. They learn about fireflies and their conservation in the Fireflies Sanctuary in Kampung Kuantan, Kuala Selangor.The day continues with Menyemat atap Nipah with people at Attap Nipah and seedling mangrove/nypa at Santuari Kelip-kelip to engage with the local environment. After a delicious dinner, participants go on a wonderful Fireflies Tour to see fireflies light up the night. Participants will enjoy discovering nature's beauties and the necessity of environmental protection in a beautiful setting.

4th August 2023In a meaningful Reflection and Sharing Session, participants share their program experiences, ideas, and takeaways. In a touching Closing Ceremony, participants say goodbye and thank the organizers. A Farewell Party celebrates the program's success and creates lasting memories. This activity concludes a transforming experience, leaving participants with cherished memories and a sense of fulfillment from their shared path toward sustainability and environmental stewardship.
