Makerspace@UM_Logo Competition Results
Geographic Information System (GIS) augmented with live streaming or archived data of the social-ecosystem creates a deep connection to a place or a phenomenon, illustrates spatial relationships, and enable the use of environment as an extension of learning space.
The competition is to create an up-to-date and accurate GIS map of the Faculty of Science complex, highlighting three or more features e.g. green patches, waterbody, land use/man-made built-environment, mobility, soundscape, students leisure space, communal space, amenity, R&D hotspots, etc. The GIS map must be augmented with a story map advocating at least one Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Additional data enrichment using audio-visual media will add merit to the submission.
A big thank you to all the 16 teams for the hard teamwork and perseverance in completing the submission and all the best for the shortlisted teams in the Grand Finale. All ten shortlisted teams are encouraged to prepare their submissions for a short 3 minutes ‘elevator’ pitching-like presentation and to choose one of their team members to narrate their GIS Story Map. Kindly confirm your team participation in the Grand Finale and email the name of the narrator and PowerPoint slides GIS story map (maximum 3 pages, including title page) by 8th June 2023 (11.59pm) via email to msithi@um.edu.my. Title page must contain the Title, Team ID, Team members name & Dept/Faculty, Name of Advisor & Dept/Faculty, SDGx advocated and the key GIS spatial data attributes. Everyone is invited and let’s cheer for the teams as we conclude the GIS Visual Science Competition. Don’t forget to bring along your team advisors and friends.

Q1. What is the role of academic advisor in this competition? Do they need to be involved in the competition
Academic advisor (AA) is expected to coach the team on a bigger perspective related to the competition. AA will not be part of the team. Appointment of AA is strongly encouraged for teams without any GIS working knowledge, but optional for those who are familiar with geospatial modelling. AA can also coach the team on other aspects eg. visual storytelling or act as the team motivator.
Q2. What if I cannot find an academic advisor ? Can our team still compete?
Search for an academic advisor is aimed at creating knowledge-expert social networking skills and collaborative lecturer-students relation. Mentoring does help in coming up with an exciting and impactful outcome with a bigger picture. However, if the team has exhausted their search options, no worries, the teams can still participate and submit their entries.
Q3. Can we change to other SDGs to champion?
The team can change the SDGs selection and can also have multiple SDGs. preliminary SDG selection during registration is to capture SDG preference for logistic planning.
Q4. What are the programmes or softwares needed for the competition? Are they open-sourced? If the participants do not have the softwares, can the organiser provide?
Organiser (Makerspace@UM) will not provide software for GIS. During the GIS Coaching session on the 7 April 2023, potential GIS open source platform will be highlighted.
Q5. Do we need to have any software/app that needs to be installed in our laptop to compete in this competition?
You need to install GIS software (open source or proprietary software) on your PC or use any web based GIS platform. Possible open source GIS software will be introduced during the first GIS Coaching Session on 7 April 2023, 2.30pm
Q6. When will the winner be announced?
All submissions will be assessed and ranked by the judges and the top 10 submissions will be asked to present their GIS story maps for final assessment during the UM Sustainability Festival (mid June 2023) at the Faculty of Science. The venue, date & time will be announced at the website:

Q7. Hi, just wondering after we register, do we go ahead and start or do we need to attend the workshop first
Registration is aimed at capturing basic data of the contestants, logistic planning and to arrange coaching sessions for those with no prior knowledge in GIS, visual storytelling and 3D printing. Coachings sessions may add value and new perspectives. Registered team can start working on the competition from 1 April and must submit the entry by 31 May 2023.
