Carlos Bethencourt is Full Professor in the Department of Economic Analysis at the Universidad de La Laguna, where he also directs the research group Development, Inequality and Environment. His research lies at the intersection of macroeconomics, development economics, public economics, and labor economics, with particular interest in economic growth, political economics, the development process, and their links with human capital, institutions and inequality. His work also examines family decision-making, female labor participation, fertility choices, and behavioral aspects of public economics such as tax evasion and crime.
Professor Bethencourt has published extensively in international peer-reviewed journals and has collaborated with leading economists from institutions such as the University of Pennsylvania, Bocconi University, and TU Dortmund.
His research has been supported by numerous competitive research projects, several of which he has led as principal investigator. He has held visiting research positions at a number of internationally renowned institutions, including the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Minnesota, Osaka University, Monash University, and the Christian Michelsen Institute. Professor Bethencourt also directs the research group Development, Inequality and Environment at the University of La Laguna. In addition, he regularly serves as a referee for leading international journals in economics, including the American Economic Review, Economic Journal, Journal of the European Economic Association, Journal of Public economics and the American Economic Journal series.
