To give our symposium guests a taste of the mesmerizing cultural world of Indonesia, we are offering the participants of the International Symposium a tour of some of the main cultural sites in and around Yogyakarta.
Please note that this tour is not covered by the Symposium fee, so it will entail additional expenses.
The good news is that we are not requiring our guests to visit all the sites. Each one may choose among the ones listed which ones he or she intends to go to, in which case, the guest will only have to pay for what he or she visits.
The symposium committee organized this tour in case the participants of the symposium would like to be accompanied and would to have some of the preparation work facilitated for them. The participants are very welcome to plan their own tours. Of course, self-designed tours will not be under the responsibility of the organizational committee of the International Symposium on the Internationalization of Democracy.
Prices listed below are estimated by checking various websites. Prices change according to how close the visit date is to the time of purchase or reservation. We will keep the participants posted on the: (1) availability of the site or event; and (2) the price for the current date.
This tour will proceed if there at least seven (7) guests who have enlisted.
The organizing committee will close registration for this tour two weeks before the start of the Symposium, that is, on April 26. Additional guests will be entertained on a case-to-case basis.
The hotel will provide breakfast, but each one will have to take an adventure and seek a place for lunch and dinner on their own. The Cultural Tour Team will suggest a place where everyone can eat, but each one will either order on their own or pay for what the team orders for them.

During the four nights of each full moon of the dry season (May through October), local dancers, artists and musicians reenact the Ramayana stories at an open amphitheater behind Prambanan Temple. This cultural event has managed to combine the diversity of Javanese arts in the form of dance, drama and music in one stage. The Ramayana stories are presented in four stages: Sinta’s abduction, Anoman’s mission to Alengka, the death of Rahwana and the final happy reunion of Rama and Sinta. (by Hotel Tentrem Yogyakarta)
The Kraton (also spelled keraton or karaton) or the Palace of Yogyakarta, is a grand complex that was meticulously planned to reflect the Javanese cosmos. This elegant complex of pavilions was constructed based on ancient beliefs, of the connection between the God, human and the natural realms. Each feature holds a special symbolic meaning related to the Javanese worldview, who consider the importance of Mount Merapi and The Indian Ocean.
