About me
I earned my Bachelor's in Economics from the University of Valencia in 1989, ranking top in my class and receiving the Extraordinary Bachelor's Award. Subsequently, I pursued a Master's in European Integration (Economics) at the College of Europe, Bruges where my master's thesis initiated my doctoral research on Exchange Rate Dynamics and quantitative methods in Economic Integration.
I defended my PhD disertation in 1993 and earned the Extraordinary Doctoral Award. That same year, I passed the EU competition as an Assistant Economist Administrator at the European Commission and obtained a position an Assistant Professor at the University of Valencia.
Since 1992, I've focused on teaching and research at Jaume I University, undertaking occasional research stays to other institutions. These include stays at the University of Nottingham in 1992 and 2004, the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1995-96, the University of Goettingen in 2011, 2013, 2019 and 2022, as well as Cornell University in 2022 and 2023.
These experiences led to initiatives such as founding the Spanish Association of International Economics and Finance and engaging in collaborative research projects. Specializing in European Integration, I've participated in many projects, evaluated European Commission programs, and held a Jean Monnet Chair since 2000, renewed in 2013 as an ad personam Chair. My teaching activities have always been devoted to Interational Economics, European Economics and Economic Integration.
My research focuses as well on international economics and economic integration, resulting in over 70 articles in scientific journals. While prioritizing international journals, my efforts aim at improving publication quality and relevance. The approach I follow is applied, having also specialized in the use of econometric and statistical techniques, that I also teach in the joint Master of Economics of the University Jaume I and the University of Valencia.
As the principal investigator for over 50 competitive research projects, including those from the National Plan, I have been a member of the INTECO research group in Economic Integration with members from the Jaume I and Valencia universities since the 1990s, that I currenty coordinated. Our research group has been recognized as a Group of Excellence and Prometeo Group by the Valencian Government. I've received recognition for five six-year research periods (Spanish sexenios) from 1990 to 2019.
