XVII BUSINESS STRATEGY SECTION WORKSHOP
STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT IN THE FACE OF CURRENT ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL CHALLENGES
Universitat Jaume I of Castelló,
Avda. Sos Baynat, s/n. Castelló de la Plana
Organizations are immersed in changes and face challenges that go beyond the scope of business strategy, directly engaging society as a whole. In line with this idea, the objective of the workshop is to debate and reflect on how recent changes and challenges in the global economy and society affect the discipline of Strategic Management and, in any case, what responses can be proposed.
We have structured the workshop into four sessions where various aspects of the topic will be analyzed.
Firstly, while it is true that Strategic Management has demonstrated significant adaptability and the ability to provide effective responses to certain adverse situations, we ask whether, given the nature and magnitude of current challenges, it is necessary to rethink the fundamental principles of our discipline. Indeed, this proposal aligns with recent debates in academic journals in our field, particularly from the perspective of sustainability and climate change.
Secondly, we will devote special attention to one of the phenomena we believe represents a major challenge today: the concentration of decision-making power within companies. This process involves the replacement of local entrepreneurs and managers by global economic agents, such as investment funds, which centralize decision-making. We will examine the implications of this shift for the formulation and implementation of strategies.
Thirdly, we ask whether academia can or should play a more active role in response to external changes. In this sense, we will explore its ability to influence and shape opinions through the dissemination of academic knowledge, debating the mechanisms by which scholars share insights, ideas, and narratives about current issues and engage with communicative platforms.
Finally, we will discuss the teaching of business strategy courses, which may be influenced by the responses that our discipline can provide to these significant economic and social challenges.
In summary, we aim for this workshop to serve as an open forum for reflection and debate on issues of concern related to teaching and research. The workshop program will include insights from experts on the various dimensions of the topic as well as contributions from participants.
