Design for Safety (DfS) Concept

A Design for Safety (DfS) approach aims to introduce the concept of safer construction works among the designers through the concept of ‘designing out’ risks and hazards at the early design stages in construction projects. This program would enhance the designer’s knowledge on prevention principles, prevention tools and technologies as well as improving the hazards identification and recognition skills among the graduate engineers. This program is important for designers to improve their occupational safety and health skills, helping owners and other stakeholders to adopt a sensible plan for risks to be managed from the beginning of the project. This program also could add value to their professional ethics in particular for designers who should fulfil their ethical duty to hold paramount the safety and health of human beings, as outlined in Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) Code of Conduct towards improving the safety performance in construction.
