The course offers the essential skill of integrating CAD software in textile design. This course aims to provide new opportunities for textile designers to explore creative options by using a computer to extend beyond the traditional methods of the textile design process.
SEMESTER 3:
TEXTILE DESIGN RESEARCH: RESIST
The course introduces students to various types of resist techniques which include hand-drawn, resist’s block and bound and stitch. The students will also be learning how the resist techniques have been applied by different cultures around the globe. Demonstration of various techniques and materials such as resist patterns on silk, tie and dye coloration with synthetic dyes and step-by-step canting or waxing process on fabrics will be conducted on weekly basis. All samples and projects are meant to be assessed at the end of the semester. Hence, these practices become a testimonial of their understanding of creating a resist textile artwork.
TEXTILE DESIGN RESEARCH: PRINTING
This subject has been designed to emphasize the intermediate level of knowledge in manual and digital printing techniques. Students will also explore various types of dyeing processes in printing using pigment and reactive dyes in manual printing and using the digital printing machine. Students are required to produce samples of printed designs on different kinds of fabrics and produce a regular size of products at the end of the course.
TEXTILE DESIGN RESEARCH: WEAVING
The course is designed to introduce the students to basic textile research and design in weaving. This course covers the theoretical and practical aspects of the looms, loom terminologies and anatomy, weaving vocabulary and techniques, materials and processes, project planning, designing drafts, choosing yarns, and understanding the basic weave structures. The students will also be introduced to various hand-woven products using table and floor looms. At the end of the course, the students should be able to plan, execute, and complete weaving projects
CREATIVE PATTERN CUTTING
This course aims to produce skillful designers with knowledge in pattern layout, construction, development and manipulation to create creative and wearable garments and other fabric-based products. This course also aims for students to understand, organize and apply the production process from conceptualization to realization for fabric-based products with technical accuracy. The program also covers from conceptualizing a specific design to the technical and production processes of draping in create toile (mock-up) and final making up with quality finishing standards.
SEMESTER 4:
TEXTILE DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
This is a research design course in preparation for their final design project where students will analyse the background information and visual details of their subject matter as a potential design element according to their respective textile discipline which are resist or printing or weaving. Students will systematically study their subject matter through a drawing process and develop motifs, patterns and compositions suitable for textile surface design and products. The observation and inspiration for developing design often are driven by current issues and design trends.
SUSTAINABLE TEXTILE DESIGN PRACTICE
The course will cover a range of topics related to sustainable textile design products, including identifying innovation opportunities and recognizing the tools and methods. The emphasis will be on materials, techniques, and applications to encourage students to think creatively and generate novel ideas that benefit the community. Design is the crucial criterion for innovating products, which must align with the four pillars of sustainability: environment, economy, society, and culture. Overall, this course is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to create sustainable textile products that are both innovative and beneficial for the community.
CAM: DIGITAL TEXTILE
This course is to emphasize the theory and tools of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) with an emphasis on the central role of the vector- based layout and digital fabric printer integration. It focuses on the integration of the technical tools and the automation of the product development cycle using industry standard digital sublimation fabric and direct to garment printers (DTG)
SEMESTER 4: (SHORT SEMESTER)
TEXTILE DESIGN THINKING AND IDEA SOLUTION
This course is designed for students to create innovative textile designs and products from a solution-driven methodology. Various phases in approaching the problems and finding solutions will be introduced to ensure the aesthetics and functional properties are aligned when creating the projects. Empathizing, Defining, Ideating, Sampling/Prototyping and Testing are the stages required for students to formulate many creative ideas in return. Subsequently, structured brainstorming sessions allow students to identify issues in a more comprehensive method and direction. Hence; visual, material and human engagement could be seen as the means for the new innovated textile designs and products.
SEMESTER 5:
TEXTILE PORTFOLIO
