University of Idaho Extension has launched a new incarnation of our Harvest Heroes program in collaboration with the Farmer Veteran Coalition of Idaho and the city of Boise at Spaulding Ranch. The mission? To prepare military veterans for self-sufficiency, small farm or food entrepreneurship, or future careers in small-scale agriculture. 

In summer 2026 we have been working hard to establish our teaching farm and incubator on the site, starting with about 1/8 of an acre this year with plans to expand.  An accessible garden space on the site utilizing raised beds and adaptive technology to welcome gardeners of all abilities is planned for installation in fall 2026. 

We are working on plans to establish beekeeping in spring 2027, with generous support from the Oregon State University Master Beekeeper Program, the Treasure Valley Beekeepers, and the Hives to Heroes Program. 

Participating veterans, family members and supporters work alongside our team to grow a market garden, receiving regular hands-on instruction. The food that is grown is used by the participants and to feed veterans in need across the Treasure Valley. 

In addition to the hands-on dirt therapy, our program also offers flexible online training for those outside the area and intensive topical workshops on subjects like soil health, harvest and handling, and pest management. 

Enrollment is free for participating veterans and their families.
