Frequently Asked Questions

What is this about?

This is an enrichment program for gifted school kids interested in mathematics. The goal is similar to that of Math Circles of Chicago. In fact, most of our students regularly attend MC^2 and participate in other math and science programs.

The focus of UICMOP is on learning and discovering math via challenging math problems.

However, UICMOP is a not a competition - all the activities are done in an open and collaborative setting.

Who is it for? How can I/my child enroll?

UICMOP is oriented towards 8-12 grade students. We have a consistent group of over 20 students from a number of Chicago area schools, including: Edison RGC, Lincoln Elementary, Walter Payton, Whitney-Young, Lincoln Park High, Latin School, Lab School.

One of our challenges is the age diversity of the students. So every session we try to include topics and problems that require different levels of preparation. However, all problems are challenging (have a look here).

There is no admission or selection process - everybody can register (here) and attend, if they can keep up with the group and enjoy the sessions. However, consistency in attendance is expected, as we try to build some ideas and techniques during the academic year.

Who is paying for it?

The program is free. The space is provided by the department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science at UIC, the organization and the instruction by Prof. Alex Furman and graduate student volunteers, the pizza is payed for by Alex Furman's research grants.
