The world we live in is becoming more technology-based as we are living in it. We are seeing a lot of advancements in technology which change the way we do things. Some decades ago, no one would have thought that we would be able to see our friends and relatives on our phone screen, talking to them from thousands of miles away. A few years ago, I didn't even know that this AR technology I used in this project even existed. I recently discovered that Apple takes advantage of this technology as well, implementing it into their Apple Maps software so that you can see the navigation route in the real world, all through your phone screen.
It is inevitable that technology is going to keep adapting and innovating into more mind-blowing things. A fantasy that might become reality very soon is the AR glasses. It has been attempted in the past, but it was not very practical or efficient. A question one might have is, how will this technology affect our way of life? Of course, technology is meant to make our lives easier and cooler.
One way I can see augmented reality glasses be used is in museums. For example, if I were to walk into a museum of Ancient Egypt, I would wish to actually feel like I am there. The museum would be able to offer you AR glasses so that you can walk around the museum in a more immersive experience. You would be able to look at a sarcophagus exhibit in front of you and watch King Tut climb out of his sarcophagus in augmented reality. You would visit a museum in Japan and experience the Age of the Samurai exhibit as if it was really in front of you, watching a group of samurai clashing their katanas.
Another way augmented reality glasses can be used is with navigation. There is already technology today that uses augmented reality to enhance navigation, but it is not very immersive or practical since you would have to look at the world through your tiny phone screen. With AR glasses, this changes the way we see things. You would be able to see arrows pointing in the direction of your destination. You would see a 3D compass above your head, showing you north, south, east, and west. Specific street signs could be amplified to seem bigger, depending on your navigation route. Bus stops could be shown through the glasses with their numbers and times. Augmented reality can really change the way we get around.
Technology amazes me, yet scares me at the same time. The capabilities of technology can be slightly overwhelming. Some people would be against these technological advancements, claiming that it is becoming too involved in our lifestyles. People are becoming more and more dependent on technology. However, I would say that the whole point of technology is to make our lives easier, and it really is. If augmented reality glasses were to be released to the public tomorrow, I would be first in line to buy them. I am looking forward to see what our future will be like and how advanced our lives will be.
