The mock-assembly line needed a task that was short enough to reasonably perform and measure
It was decided to make the assembly line task: “build a paper airplane”
The right paper airplane needed to be chosen that wasn’t too difficult to teach subjects before the experiment and also didn’t take too long to make
The model to the left, called “The Dart” was ultimately used
The instructions used to build the paper airplane are shown to the left
The research was conducted in Professor Jeong’s Human-in-Mind Engineering Research (HiMER) Lab
The Microsoft Azure Kinect DK was used to record motion data footage
Participants selected preformed trials at the HiMER Lab
Most of the participants selected were students at UIC
The participants were captured with the Microsoft Azure motion capture device
Total of 4 trials per participant
There were a total of 12 participants in this experiment
Ages ranged from 18-54 years old
Heights ranged from 5’2” to 6’2”
A total of 6 participants identified as male and 6 identified as female
The subjects were told to build three paper airplanes while in the specific posture according to the activity
Subjects were told to build three paper airplanes.
The completion time and airplane quality (the average of the three airplane quality ratings) were recorded. Then they took the NASA-TLX survey after the activity.
Subjects were instructed to slouch over the working space will being seated. We defined a slouched posture as one where the subject was sitting down with a poor back posture.
The completion time and airplane quality (the average of the three airplane quality ratings) were recorded. Then they took the NASA-TLX survey after the activity.
Subjects were instructed to sit-up straight in their chair. We defined a sitting up posture as one where the subjects sat in a chair with their backs in a straight position.
The completion time and airplane quality (the average of the three airplane quality ratings) were recorded. Then they took the NASA-TLX survey after the activity.
Subjects were instructed to stand-up and work over the desk.
The completion time and airplane quality (the average of the three airplane quality ratings) were recorded. Then they took the NASA-TLX survey after the activity.
The subject’s age and heights were recorded
They were shown how to construct the airplane and then made their own with no help
They were asked to make three more while being timed (Activity 1)
Once complete, they were given the NASA-TLX survey
The subject would be instructed to make 3 more paper airplanes now sitting in whatever they perceived slouched to be (Activity 2)
---- Parts 4 and 5 were repeated for sitting up straight (Activity 3) and standing up (Activity 4) ---
