Text: Joseph Gallian "Contemporary Abstract Algebra" 9th Edition (available via UIC Bookstore)
Prerequisites: Grade of C or better in MATH 215. Familiarity with Modular Arithmetic, some basic proof writing skills are expected.
Abstract Algebra is one of the main pillars of modern mathematics. In this course we will explore the basic objects in algebra: groups, rings, and fields.
I hope to cover most of Parts 1-4 (chapters 1-22).
Tentative scoring scheme: Participation (10%) + Homework (30%) + Midterm 1 (20%) + Midterm 2 (20%) + Final (20%).
The participation component refers to attendance and active participation in the classes.
The Midterm Exams and the Final Exam are likely to be in the take-home format.
Exams schedule:
Midterm I on Friday February 26 (take home).
Midterm II on Friday April 9 (take home).
We will follow the textbook by Gallian. Notes from the class will be available in this folder.
Zoom recordings will be available after each class (access via Blackboard).
There will be weekly problem sets that will be collected and graded (via Gradescope).
Homework will be submitted via Gradescope. Late homework will be accepted only in exceptional circumstances.
You may discuss homework problems with other students, but you must write up your solution independently.
Welcome to Math 330.
