STUDENT CHOICE
For my Student Choice topic, I decided to pick one of the best VR games available, Population:ONE. This game was developed and published by a startup company called BigBox VR, Inc and was released cross platform to be available on the Oculus and Steam store in October 2020. Population:ONE is a first-person battle-royale shooter similar to other popular titles people will recognize like Fortnite, PUBG, and APEX Legends.
The main mode/point of the game is that there are 8 teams of 3 and the last team to survive wins the game. Every game starts with each of the teams getting into pods that fly you across the map and your team must decide where it's best to go in a short amount of time. You and your team must loot buildings for weapons, supplies, and food to help your chances at fighting off other teams. Your team will always be on the move with limited time to make decisions on what to do during the game, so every choice can ultimately lead to victory or failure in a match.

WHAT MAKES IT STAND OUT
Advisement used for a Population:ONE tournament.
Although Population:ONE is made for entertainment purposes, it is one of the few existing VR games that pushes the limits of creativity and what is possible in a VR. Most VR games can make you feel confined in what you can do and have more simple mechanics in their respective games at a slower pace. Population:ONE on the other hand is very fast paced and will be liked by players that will have to face off against others who pose a challenge. It displays how VR can be looked at as a serious gaming-platform for casual and competitive play instead of a gimmick to experience games in a new way and has already taken a platform in the Esports scene.
GAMEPLAY
The image above shows the player holding and shooting their gun at another player which shows them landing their shots, denoted by the "-15" health for the opposing player.
The image above shows the player currently in a pod flying while looking at the world map to decide where to land with their team.
Population:ONE incorporates a lot of realistic features that also makes the player feel more immersed than most games do as if they were really fighting instead of pressing buttons to accomplish actions.
In terms of weapons, players can aim down sights to hit accurate shots, handle recoil from firing multiple shots, and do specific maneuvers with their hands to reload and cock different types of guns. Healing is done by eating real items. This includes things like peeling a banana peel or shaking a shake first before being able to use the item. Players are able to revive their teammates with defibrillators that they must rub together fast before use which is provided in everyone's inventory.
Population:ONE mobility mechanics is another big factor that makes it stand out and shows how it's a great use of VR. Players can climb on anything in game by clicking and holding at a single point and dragging your hand down, like climbing a ladder. This allows people to get to higher ground which leads into the next mechanic where players have a glide ability to safely get down from any height. This is done by stretching out their hands to form a T with their body and lifting up one arm higher than the other will turn the player as if they were really gliding. Population:ONE also allows players to build square platforms horizontally or vertically to create bases, high points to climb and glide from, defend themselves from enemy fire, etc.
Although there are many mechanics like these that exist in games already, experiencing it in VR gives a way different feeling. Whether it may be that you're in a firefight with another team, scoping in to snipe someone from a long distance, or building barricades to defend yourselves, players will feel a higher sense of adrenaline and emotion while playing. All the movements and mechanics a player must to do play in a first person view will produce more realistic behavior and decision making in comparison to playing a game with a mouse/keyboard.
Implementing mechanics in VR often ends up with issues and can leave the players dealing with clunky and unreliable controls. However, Population:ONE's mechanics were flawlessly executed, resulting in great gameplay flow that makes players want to come back for more. It's easy to hold weapons and shoot down sights to provide a satisfying and smooth feeling, unlike other VR games that can be very clunky/glitchy. Each aspect of the game isn't too complex or simple either, but instead has a great balance. Whether it be flying, climbing, or interacting with any items, players will almost never have problems with a mechanic's usage.
Players bring up an options menu by clicking a button and allows them to select an item in their inventory by pointing with a cursor.
A player must bring their controllers together to rub the defibrillators in a fast motion to charge the bar and revive their teammate.
The picture above is what the player sees at the main menu of the game. They can select their mode, invite people to play with, customize their weapons/character, etc.
Population:ONE is only available on VR so it's intended users will be expected to have a VR headset to play on. The game is fast paced and has advanced controls so it's recommended that users have plenty of experience maneuvering in VR, don't get motion sickness very easily, and enjoy playing games for entertainment. It is a battle-royale first person shooter so players who like those kinds of games will also enjoy this one as well. The game would definitely bring in players who already play battle-royale games like Fortnite and Apex Legends as they would have a good understanding of how to play. Although these players wouldn't be as good as the other games they play on a mouse/keyboard, experiencing those types of games in a VR setting gives a different feeling of enjoyment and fun you don't experience often from games. The game also includes multiple game modes for solo or squad play so playing with friends, by yourself, or with random people are given options. Different modes are also available which have different levels of competitiveness so this game will fit well for competitive/casual users.
In terms of age, it fits well for those over the age of 13 years, as there is no gore or realistic presentation of someone dying. However, the game is centered around being competitive, which can be handled better by those who are older and playing online with others in a game with voice chat always can lead to hearing vulgar things from others.

Physical movement with a heated headset on a user's face can lead to sweating. (If unwanted by the player)
The experience is dependent on your headset/setup:
"PC VR" headsets
Playing on a "PC VR" headset requires a PC with a costly processor to run smoothly
Headset is attached by a cord which can get tangled as you move around physically and ruins the immersion and game experience
Standalone headsets
The graphics are ok, but shows a significant difference when compared to PC VR
Limited customizability for player models, must choose predefined characters.
