The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has projected a 36% growth in Data Science occupations during the period from 2021 to 2031, driven by the demand for workers who can handle big data.
In 2021, there were nearly 10 million workers in STEM occupations and this total is projected to grow by almost 11% by 2031, over two times faster than the total for all occupations. They also pay substantially more: Median annual wages as of May 2021 were $95,420 for STEM occupations, compared to $40,120 for non-STEM occupations
The Data Analytics supply/demand ratio for recent grads into entry-level jobs in Illinois is only 16%, according to Andrew Hanson, Senior Director of Research, Strada Education Foundation. See slide 20 from presentation given at National Break Through Tech yearly meeting, NYC 4/10/2024.
Currently in Illinois, 23.5% of all job postings include at least one data science skill, according to the March '24 Burning Glass Institute report which indicates that data science skills aren't just for data scientists anymore, and employer demand for data science skills will grow even faster over the next decade.
