Mrs.Bates & Mrs.Goforth
Welcome to third grade!
There are so many fun things that your child will learn in third grade. Some great things to focus on are reading comprehension, multiplication, and division! Below is an overview of the academics that will be taught throughout the year. I also included a list of back to school supplies your child will need.
Math- Go Math! is the math program by Union Hill School District. Students will be using math manipulatives to explore new math concepts, practicing flashcards to memorize math facts, and doing math worksheets that reinforce concepts. A homework page will come home each night. Provide flashcards at home to practice multiplication facts or use computer games. It is imperative for the student’s success in math that multiplication facts are memorized.
Reading- Journeys is our adopted literature/language arts curriculum. This curriculum series will be used for whole class and small group reading instruction. This instruction includes grammar, spelling, story elements, comprehension, writing, literature, and phonics. Students will practice literature/language arts skills and work on improving fluency and higher-level thinking skills. We will also be using the iReady computer program to assist with reading.
Writing- The main focus in third grade is to build confidence as writers, write in compound and complex sentences, and paragraph writing that includes a topic sentence and conclusion. Responding to literature, research, and summarizing will be an emphasis. We will also learn letter writing skills, descriptive writing, and poetry.
Spelling- Spelling words come home on Monday and are to be studied for the test on Friday.
Science- We will be studying motion and matter in third grade.
Social Studies- We mainly focus on communities, government, and local history.
