East African Conference on Resilient and Sustainable Cities
The African Centre for Sustainable Cities Studies (ACS) is pleased to invite paper, poster and innovation exhibition proposals for the “East African Conference on Resilient and Sustainable Cities”. The conference will be conducted on February 26 and 27, 2025. The objective of the conference is to provide a platform and opportunity for educators, researchers, scholars, practitioners, innovators and students to come together in order to share and discuss latest development of their works related to resilient and sustainable city development and the way forward.
The focus of the regional conference is to present the most current, original and innovative research ideas, and solutions and professional practices for achieving a sustainable future in a multidisciplinary context. Specifically, innovative research results and professional practices within the context of sustainable, innovative digital technologies, local knowledge systems, participation and governance, and resource management, as well as cross-cutting issues will be presented and discussed.
The conference organizers invite academicians, educators, researchers, policy makers, architects, engineers and other practitioners, community representatives, innovators, students, and other stakeholders across all levels and different fields to share their views, concerns, perspectives, experiences and knowledge about sustainable city development in the East African region.
The 5 topics we focus on
1. Digital technologies
Gaining valuable and critical insights into leveraging digital innovations and identifying the transformative potential of these technologies in urban development.
2. Knowledge systems
How can Indigenous Knowledge help to solve local spatial, economic, social, cultural and policy problems. This way, Indigenous Knowledge contributes to maintaining healthy lives anchored in local culture, preventing conflicts, managing local affairs, and thus, supporting global solutions for the struggle for resource use.
3. Resource management
How can resources be extracted, utilised and managed for sustainable cities including water, energy, waste, transport systems, heritage sites and others. In addition it will provide a platform for participants to share the role of digital technologies, policies, research and innovation and industries.
4. Participation and governance
A platform to delve into the critical nexus between citizen participation, governance structures, and the sustainable development of rapidly expanding urban areas accross Africa. To foster dialogue and katalyse action towards more equitable, resilient, and sustainable cities.
5. Cross-cutting issues
Exploring dimensions of resilience of African Cities against disasters, epidemics, climate change, etc., and how this influences various efforts to achieving sustainable development and how that quantifies the progress towards achieving national, regional and international development goals.

Poster presentation and PhD Colloquium
Chair: Dr. Atupelye Komba
Resilient and sustainable cities are not merely challenges of the future; they are pressing imperatives of today. Recognizing that the efforts of current students are pivotal for shaping the future, we invite them to share their innovative research through posters and oral presentations. These contributions should illuminate new concepts and studies aimed at fostering sustainability and resilience in urban development. The core of both the poster sessions and the PhD colloquium is to highlight originality, innovation, and the potential for significant impact within the context of sustainable city development. We are particularly interested in submissions that focus on digital technologies, local knowledge systems, participatory governance, and resource management—all within the framework of resilient and sustainable urban environments.
Posters: We invite submission of posters featuring innovative research and case studies that contribute to the discourse on sustainable urban development and resilience.
