Please use this updated curriculum for ENG1L courses that are NOT using Empower. The first page is key to understanding the format and expectations in this revised document for UGDSB.
You'll notice this not a traditional English class. Rather, there is a strong focus on reading instruction (ideally, about 35 minutes every day) as well as learning communication skills.

Lexia PowerUp is a computer based program that focuses on developing reading skills in areas such as word study, grammar, and comprehension. It will adapt its instruction to meet the specific needs of individual adolescent learners.
Teachers will have access to view student progress as well as teacher resources to support implementation.
All students not in the Empower classes will have access to Lexia PowerUp.
Suggested use: 25-30 mins 4x a week

At times, you may wish to dig deeper into an aspect of sound or a spelling pattern that comes up form a CUYC/SOYS lesson.

There are some specific teaching strategies for phonological and phonemic awareness skills, and reading and writing unfamiliar words, located in the appendixes.
There are lots of specific teacher lessons available that are ideal for supporting students when they get stuck in Lexia. Use these for individual or small group instruction. However, you might find these lessons helpful to support other learning as well!
You might find the sections on decoding and fluency the most relevant for your ENG1L classrooms.
